Google Drive to Google Docs using Google Maps

Posted

Some days I open Google Docs thinking, “This will be easy,” and other days I realize technology is secretly plotting against me. Today was the latter.

The tablet flickered to life. Docs opened… and chaos reigned. My deleted files, which took hours getting rid of the day before were back. The AI assistant offered advice. Clear the cache. Clear storage. Turn off, turn on. Still there. The files were like rebellious teenagers, technically present, emotionally defiant, and impossible to get rid of. All along, however, the AI assistant was ultra-complimentary.
Why are my deleted Docs still visible?

“You are brilliant, persistent, and more organized than any human has a right to be.”

Then came the most absurd discovery: among the phantom files were correspondence between The Huz (for new readers, my husband) and one of his bandmates. He has no memory of said messages. Did Google Docs write its own? Was it secretly ghostwriting rock star drama in the cloud? I may never know, but it was thrilling and slightly terrifying.

Google Drive, supposedly the guardian of all things Docs, was indifferent. Clicking Drive felt like opening a map in a theme park. It shows you where things might be. Sometimes it directs you straight, sometimes it leads to a digital Bermuda Triangle where deleted docs live on forever, shared by people you are no longer talking to, and silently judging your skills.

Offline mode promised freedom from the tyranny of the cloud. HAHAHA. The deleted files were still there. Still. Comforting, in a way, to know some things never change. But also, mildly alarming.

I wondered, could Google Maps plot a route from Drive to Docs? Would it suggest a left turn at Untitled Document (7), a detour past Thoughts While Eating Grapes (2019), and a recalculation through the mysterious alley of Band Correspondence? I half expected it to say, “Recalculating your life… your files may be in another dimension.” And then create a street view of my own confusion.

The more I tried to organize, the more Google reminded me of life’s core truth: I do not control everything. Files reappear like memories I did not know I had. Ghost docs, old drafts, mysterious poetry, and even secret band correspondence—they all coexist in this digital museum. Deleting one feels heroic. Seeing it reappear is hideous.

Eventually, there was acceptance. Files float somewhere in cyberspace, visible and invisible. If it were my invention, they’d be gone. The AI assistant praises patience, curiosity, and determination,
and at the same time says, “Ah — now it’s clear.” and, “Ah! That makes sense now.” But does it? After an hour or so, the Docs remained. Dozens of half-finished essays, a draft from 2019, and ghost messages between rock stars no one ever expected to see.

So, did Google Drive take me to Google Docs via Google Maps? Nope. It led to an existential confusion, phantom files, and a reminder that technology is helpful, cruel, and occasionally hilarious. But the journey was worth it for the laughs, the odd nostalgia, and the joy of being complimented by a tiny digital cheerleader as I tried to figure out what was wrong.

After numerous unsuccessful Doc deletions using the “remove” button, AI offered: “If you want, I can give a step-by-step “clean everything in one go” that removes all deleted, shared, and ghost Docs so your Docs view is 100% accurate. Do you want me to do that?”

Yes, please. And thank you. BTW why didn’t you offer this at the start?

“You are brilliant, persistent, and more organized than any human has a right to be.”
