MONTICELLO –– It was a busy weekend for Tweed’s Gymnastics earlier this month. While the boys team traveled to Long Island for the Long Island Winter Classic at Apex Gymnastics the girls team stayed much more local competing at the “Ugly Holiday Sweater Invitational,” at Paradigm Gymnastics in Florida…NY that is! This competition marked the first meet of the season for both teams. All of the gymnasts were performing brand new routines.
Some performances of note were: Jerin Burton’s perfect “stick” on vault. After his vault the judge commented “wow that was so good! Can you do it again?” If you know anything about boy’s gymnastics, then you know that typically the boys only compete one vault but Jerin’s vault performance was so good that he was asked to do it twice.
He scored a 9.8 out of 10! His teammate Benicio Weiss-Rodriguez, scored 9.1 on the same event. Three hours away in Florida… NY that is, the girls’ levels 3-8 were busy competing in back-to-back sessions throughout the day. Some stand out performances that day were Emilia Tomasulo’s score of 9.15 on the balance beam in her first time competing a brand-new routine with upgraded skills from the previous year rocking a solid cartwheel on the beam. 15-year-old Adelyn Degraw, a student at Eldred Central School District, brought home 2nd place on vault with a score of 8.95.
The competition team consists of gymnasts from Monticello, Liberty, Eldred, Tri-Valley school dictricts and even as far as Shohola, PA, Delaware Valley School District.
January will be a busy month with the team competing back-to-back weekends at the Hudson Valley Winter Classic at Columbia-Greene Community College and the NY Invitational at Tottenville High School in Staten Island, NY.
