One of my very favorite summertime events is coming up next weekend. Sponsored by the Mohican Lake Rod and Gun Club it is their annual pulled pork sandwich dinner. The Club has been in operation in Highland Lake since the 1940’s and provides several programs to gather folks together for fun events and outdoor recreational activities especially for children to educate about the importance of safe hunting and fishing practices. Their annual events are a lot of fun, especially the day of ice fishing and a pig roast and are wonderful family events and the Club members could not be more welcoming and the kiddos have the best time! This year the dinner was moved from May to Saturday, June 7 and as always, is Take Out Only. The pulled pork dinner features slow cooked smoked pulled pork with BBQ sauce on a roll, with a container of Carolina sauce on the side, coleslaw, baked beans, and dessert (if I remember from last year my dessert was two warm mini cupcakes-one of which became instant “car cuisine” by the end of The Club’s driveway!)

Everything is made from scratch by club members who definitely know their way around the kitchen and the price is only $12 and benefits the Rod and Gun Club’s community programs and activities. If you are like me and raised way up north you are probably wondering what the heck Carolina sauce is. Well, it is a southern style dipping mop sauce made with vinegar, spices, and mustard and it’s slightly tangy and completely delicious.

The dinner event will take place  at the Mahogany Ridge Clubhouse which is located at 261 Leers Road in Glen Spey and the drive through pick up at the clubhouse is on June 7 from 4-6pm. Believe me when I tell you that the tickets to this dinner always sell out and disappear very quickly, and the Club has to turn away some very disappointed folks every year that were too slow to get tickets. To get your tickets go to the Mohican Rod and Gun Club on Facebook and message them or call them at 845-701-3578.

The Club is also sponsoring a raffle to win a top of the line Yeti Tundra Cooler jammed packed with Yeti camping supplies. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the Pulled Pork Dinner pickup at the Clubhouse. The drawing will be held on Sunday June 8th.

St Anthony’s Church in Yulan will be holding a Spring Sale in the Parish Center across from the church on Sunday, June 8th from 9am-3pm. Sponsored by the Parish’s Women’s Group, the Sale will feature tables of interesting wares with yard sale merchandise tables for individuals, vintage tables and vendor tables featuring small entrepreneurs, local businesses and service-related companies. I attended last year and there were many very interesting things to buy and I bought handmade earrings and several very pretty antique tea towels that I now use all the time.

There will be a Summer Fun in the Sun raffle with a nifty cloth beach buggy filled to the brim with sun hats, sunglasses, snacks galore, beach towels, outdoor games, grilling utensils, cooler bags and ten different varieties of adult cocktail beverages that should make for a very relaxing day at the Lake. The raffle tickets are $10 and will be available at the spring sale.

Another feature at the sale is they will be serving hot dogs and hamburgers and beverages so you can pick up a nice lunch at very reasonable prices. Tables are still available at  $20 for yard and vintage and $30 for business vendors. If interested in a table rental or need more information, contact Elisa at 973-293-3559 or email her at pianotimestudio@yahoo.com.
