Himalayan Tavern brings Nepali dishes to Cochecton Center

COCHECTON CENTER – The Himalayan Tavern is located above the historic Heinle’s General Store off of Route 52 in Cochecton Center. Under new ownership since 2023, the general store kept its roots offering gas and convenience store items, while the restaurant upstairs offers Nepali fare.

Owner Bijay Singh was born in Nepal and moved to the U.S. when he was 21 years old. At first living in Queens, he moved to the area four years ago and then bought the business.

The restaurant offers Nepali specialties—including signature momos (steamed dumplings), thupka (noodle soup) and chana (chickpea curry). They have introduced an American menu as well, with burgers, chicken sandwiches and steak.

They also recently started adding weekly and monthly events, hoping to draw in more people. There’s a happy hour on Mondays and Tuesdays from 4 to 6 p.m., Ladies Night on Fridays as well as live music, line dancing, open mic nights, and a car show outside on scheduled days.

“I want to make it a community-friendly restaurant and serve the community,” Singh said.

The restaurant is open every day except for Wednesday, and the general store is open every day. It is located at 6 Old County Road, Cochecton, NY 12726. Call 845-252-5076 for more information.
