HURLEYVILLE – The Hurleyville Performing Arts Centre (HPAC) announced on Tuesday that it will cease operations at the end of October. All scheduled events through October 31 at HPAC will continue as planned.
In a statement, HPAC said that The Center for Discovery (TCFD) “will carry on [the] work” of HPAC.
“TCFD will carry on this work to sustain and expand HPAC’s legacy of providing meaningful arts programming in Hurleyville, including initiatives such as sensory-friendly movies, activities for seniors and children, Holiday in Hurleyville, and other community events,” the statement said.
The multi-arts center opened in 2016 and was intended to serve as the cultural anchor of the redevelopment of Hurleyville in collaboration with TCFD, an organization that serves children and adults with autism and complex disabilities.
A week before this announcement, HPAC announced it would close the Tango Café, the restaurant located on site.
“It is with very heavy hearts that we share that, due to circumstances beyond our control, Tango Café will be closing its doors,” their statement said.
HPAC was initially operated under The Center for Discovery’s umbrella after opening in 2016. In 2020, it became an independent nonprofit, with philanthropist Janet Carrus serving as founding board president.
On HPAC’s Facebook post, Carrus commented, “The funding needed to keep our doors open did not come from the State, County or community businesses, although we applied for grants, and knocked on corporate doors, and not having a steady clientele made it impossible. I’m sorry I could not do more, but at peace knowing I/we have tried.”
