130 Years Ago - 1896

Buck Brook – Miss Minnie Huff of this place has accepted the position of cook at the hotel of Lewis Bauernfeind in North Branch.

Kenoza Lake – A mistake occurred in the Record a couple of weeks ago in regard to the new boarder at Rev. E. Corneille’s – it’s a boy, not a girl.

120 Years Ago - 1906

A Holstein bull belonging to John Miller of Beechwoods was killed the other day by the kick of Mr. Miller’s horse, it having crushed the animal’s skull. The bull was sired by the Holstein which killed the late Robert L. Jones of White Lake and Mr. Miller paid for it, when a calf several weeks old, $30.

Charles Robisch on Monday sold his milk route in this village to Charles Scheidell, who also runs a route here. Possession was given yesterday. Mr. Robisch’s reason for selling is that his farm and boarding house in Beechwoods required all his time.

Scheidell & Schmidt, insurance agents, and the Sullivan County Dairy Co. have opened offices in the Masonic building where they have pleasant quarters.

J.H. Meyers of New York, who is sojourning here, took his ten horse power Cadillac car to the city last week and returned with one of 45 horsepower and lamps that throw light a quarter of a mile ahead. Mr. Meyer is evidently an auto enthusiast.

Farm hands are in great demand through the haying season and good men are getting as high as $2.50 a day.

The Jeffersonville Tigers again walked away with the Youngsville Lambs last Sunday, this time on the field opposite Meyers’ hotel in Youngsville. The score was 25 to 2. Next Sunday the Jeffersonville team will play a team of crack players from the Clairmont, formerly the Halfway House, and a good game is expected. Game called at 3 p.m. on Chelius grounds in the village of Jeff.

110 Years Ago - 1916

Rev. George J.V. Schorling, new pastor of the Reformed Church, and his wife of East Northport, L.I., have arrived here. He will hold German services every Sunday morning at 10:30 and English services in the evening at 8 o’clock.

A son arrived at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Myers, north of the village of Jeffersonville, on Monday.

Peter Hubert has picked about 375 baskets of strawberries from his garden patch this season. He sold nearly all of them here.

The rains this year have produced a tremendous hay crop. But what good is the big hay crop if old Jupiter Pluvius won’t let the farmers harvest it. Few have yet started haying and those who have are having a hard time trying to dry the hay enough to put it away. (Ed. Note: true in 1916 and unfortunately true again in 1956.)

Harry Mathorn of Kenoza Lake has acquired the powerful American car of Joseph Alpy of Jeff, the former trading his Buick car in on the deal.

George C. Korth and bride, who were stopping at the home of the latter’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ed A. Brand, were given a tin pan serenade by the boys on Friday night. The bridal couple left on Saturday for New York where they will live.

William P. Miller, Theo. Bollenbach, Louis Erdman and Oscar Eggler of Jeff made the record catch of the season – 193 catfish and pickerel at Hunter Pond on Monday night.

90 Years Ago - 1926

Sidney Marold, aged about 30, was instantly killed by lightning while seated on the back porch of his home at Old Cochecton during the storm last Saturday afternoon at about 3 o’clock.

Theron Edwards, aged 19, and son of Sidney Edwards of Youngs­ville, was drowned last evening in the private pond of Ed Champlin of Liberty.

Arrangements have been made through the Farm Bureau office for holding a meeting of beekeepers at John Townsend’s place in White Sulphur Springs on July 28. Professor R.B. Wilson, an authority on bees, will discuss various problems of apiculture.

The boy who catches the big fish with a bent pin on a string tied by a sapling has been outclassed by Bennie Peaceman of this village, who, while bathing in the creek near his home below this village last week, caught a three and one-quarter pound trout with his hands. The trout had ventured into shallow water and was driven out on the stone. John Bossley bought the beauty for a dollar and five cents.

The village board, at their regular meeting Monday night, appointed Fred W. Schadt, village clerk, treasurer to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Robert Mann, who has been appointed postmaster. The board also appointed Dr. A.H. Schonger of North Branch village health officer in place of Dr. J.C. Gain of this village who declined the appointment made a few weeks ago.

Miss Elna Armbrust arrived at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Armbrust of Kenoza Lake on Sunday, July 15. The new arrival weighs only 6 1/2 pounds but she needs a lot of attention.

90 Years Ago - 1936

Charles H. Duttweiler, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin J. Duttweiler of Jeffersonville, on July 10th entered the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis for a four year course and is believed to be the first from Sullivan County to obtain this honor and privilege.

A son, Lawrence L., was born July 6 to Mr. and Mrs. Carl Dinnerstein of Brooklyn. The father was a Jeffersonville High School student in 1922 and is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Harris Dinnerstein.

Rev. Harold Blake has been appointed representative of St. Joseph’s Seminary at Callicoon to attend an education conference in California.

At the annual school meeting in the Jeff district Tuesday night, Charles M. Peterson, Harry M. Soule and John Borg were re-elected trustees. The budget of $32,800 was adopted with $8,700 to be raised by tax.

At the above meeting, Dr. C.O. Wilkin, a member of the Board, was chosen chairman of the meeting and L.P. Faubel and Arthur Luchs, tellers.

Most of the men don’t look so fit in those shirtless bathing suits. As a woman writer remarks, “Men are like salads – most of their charm is in the dressing.”

The annual bazaar of St. George’s R.C. Church will be held at the Kenoza Falls Lodge next Monday.

This is the time of the year when seven or eight relatives drop in on you without warning and say, “Now don’t make a fuss over us – just imagine we aren’t here.”

Last Thursday evening at Temple Inn, Shandelee, a celebration was held for completion of the Shandelee-Youngsville WPA road.

80 Years Ago - 1946

A skimmelton was given last Thursday night at Sim’s Hotel for Mr. and Mrs. Elroy S. Krum of Birch Ridge who were married May 8 at the Presbyterian parsonage in Jeff.

Miss Edith Knickerbocker, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Marshall Knickerbocker of Roscoe, and Hobart Krum of Livingston Manor were married in Woodbourne, June 9th.

Mr. and Mrs. William H. LeRoy of Jeffersonville have announced the engagement of their daughter, Shirley J., to Ray Semon of Kingston.

Mr. and Mrs. Archie Tremper of Youngsville have announced the engagement of their daughter, Eva Eleanor, to Clarence O. Roesner, son of Mrs. Edward T. Roesner of Kenoza Lake.

Beginning next Monday evening, July 22, the Callicoon Center Band, Ray Shaara director, will give an open air concert at the Tumble Inn bandstand every Monday during the summer. Old officers re-elected were President Clarence Krantz, Secretary Eugene Weissman, and Treasurer Harry Schuler.

Eleanore Peppmuller and Arthur Ruppert, in the high school graduating class this year, have been accepted for admission to Hartwick College in Oneonta for September, for a four-year course.

The barn of Victor Knack, on the Fred Knack homestead in Buck Brook near North Branch, was fired by lightning Tuesday evening and burned to the ground.

70 Years Ago - 1956

At the reorganization meeting of the Youngsville Board of Education, Agnes M. Spielmann was elected president, the first woman ever elected to that post in Youngsville.

Jacob E. Yaeger of Jeffersonville has been named to the Honor Roll of the Farm Family Life Insurance Co., Albany, for the month of June, for his outstanding record of service to farm families in Sullivan County.

A five-year-old Farmingdale, L.I., boy, Arthur Domin, was drowned on Sunday in a lake on the property of the Paramount Hotel at Parksville, where he was vacationing with his parents.

A triple celebration was held Saturday at the home of Justice and Mrs. William Deckelman. It was the 40th wedding anniversary of Justice and Mrs. Deckelman, the 15th wedding anniversary of their daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Bowen, and the birthday of Mrs. Deckelman.

Principal Erwin Baker is due home this week from a two week’s cruise with the Navy as part of his annual service in the Naval Reserve.

J. Vance Hunt is moving his local printing business to Hawley, Pa.

Herbert Buddenhagen of Hortonville is nursing a broken collarbone from a freak accident on Saturday when a sledge hammer he was using tangled in a clothesline and came down on his shoulder.

Boy Scout Troop 91 of Youngsville is at Beech Mountain Boy Scout Camp for ten days.

Last Tuesday evening a group of 84 friends and members of the Methodist churches of Jeffersonville, Cochecton, Fosterdale and Kenoza Lake gave Rev. Robert Reiners and his mother, Mrs. Grace Reiners, a surprise “welcome back” party.

Miss Betty Robertson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Robertson of Youngsville has received a Fulbright grant as an exchange teacher to Austria for the year 1956-57. She currently teaches German and Latin at Northport, L.I. In Austria she will teach English in Kufstein, a resort town of 12,000 in the Tyrol.

60 Years Ago - 1966

Supreme Court Justice and Mrs. William Deckelman, Jeffersonville, and their daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Bowen of Syracuse, celebrated mutual anniversaries at a party held at the Village Inn in Hortonville on July 9. The Deckelmans have 50 years behind them and the Bowens were celebrating their Silver Anniversary.

After several years of trying, Sheriff Louis Ratner finally got an appropriation from the County Board of Supervisors for a boat and apparatus to patrol county lakes to cut down motorboat speeding and similar infractions on the water.

Interesting reading these days is “The Upper Delaware Drummer,” being published by Joe and Dorothy Purcell of Narrowsburg. The third issue is dedicated to Valleau C. Curtis, president of Curtis Nurseries, Callicoon. “The Drummer” is profusely illustrated by several Sullivan County artists and has much historical fact which probably would not be otherwise recorded. A section is devoted to Old Time Fairs including Grahamsville and Honesdale, Pa. W. D. Adams of Stalker, Pa., who is still training trotters at 91, is featured.

50 Years Ago - 1976

Rev. Myron McCormick, OFM, local superior of St. Joseph Friary, Callicoon, has received his new assignment. He will be leaving the end of July to assume his new duties as Procurator and Finance Director of St. Anthony’s Shrine in Boston, Mass.

June 20 was confirmation day for George Creegan, Donna Dailey, Roberta Grund and Lisa Aprilante at the Lake Huntington Presbyterian Church. Rev. Arthur Smith officiated at the service.

The Delaware Free Library of Callicoon observed its 25th anniversary of serving the public with a variety of reading material. Howard Welsh, president of the Callicoon Kiwanis, presented a check for $282, proceeds from a pancake breakfast held in April.

Debbie Fix, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert N. Fix of Liberty, and Kurt Wohltjen, son of Mrs. Elaine Hadden and the late Harold J. Wohltjen of Liberty, were married June 19 at St. Peter’s R.C. Church in Liberty.

Mark Clewell of Jeffersonville caught a 22-inch pickerel which was good enough to earn him a trophy at Jack’s Sporting Goods in Fosterdale.

40 Years Ago - 1986

Governor Mario M. Cuomo was guest speaker Saturday night at the Democratic Dinner held at the Concord Hotel in Kiamesha Lake.

Miss Susan Brown, who has been in Paris, France, the past four years with Price and Waterhouse, has been promoted to manager of the firm at Geneva, Switzerland. The Kenoza Lake native will take up her new duties the first of August.

Kathy Ketelsen, Miss Welcome Lake (Pa.), was named Queen of the Narrowsburg Firemen’s Fourth of July celebration. First runner-up was Bonnie Sydorko, representing Yulan, and second runner-up was Lake Huntington’s Maria Toscano.

While two local softball teams look for life after state play, 16 other teams will battle in Cochecton Center for bragging rights in Sullivan County. Roche’s Garage of Callicoon and B&H Peters of Ellenville travel to Troy this weekend for the 9-man Major Modified New York State Softball championships. The state winners will go to the State of Washington to play in national tournament Labor Day weekend.

The Ethelbert B. Crawford Memorial Library in Monticello will be holding a week of celebration in honor of its 50th anniversary from August 4 through the 9th.

The Town of Delaware Zoning Board of Appeals, apparently acting to a stymie on a request made last month for “compensation,” officially handed in their resignation at the Town Board meeting Thursday night. Supervisor William Dirie said the action was “a complete surprise.” At last month’s meeting, Chairman Ronald Cucci asked the board to consider some kind of compensation to the members for the time they have spent working for the town. Before the Town Board could issue an answer, the resignation was received. The resignation, effective July 15, is for all five members of the board: Ronald Cucci, Eugene Kolbe, Daniel Buddenhagen, Arthur Leewe and Andrew Ziegler. “Mr. Rosen, town attorney, told us they could receive compensation but then what about the Planning Board?” Mr. Dirie said.

30 Years Ago - 1996

Aeromania ‘96 was grounded for two days by rain due to Hurricane Bertha.

Roughly 15 percent of the entire county workforce are eligible to retire before the end of the year, and 60 have indicated their desire to do so, the county’s director of personnel Richard Green said this week.

As part of a new advertising campaign, the Fosterdale Motor Lodge filmed a television commercial on its grounds Thursday. Dozens of people showed up that morning to get a chance to be on TV.

The Roscoe Community Theater Group, a regional theatrical troupe, will perform Andrew Lloyd Weber’s legendary “Jesus Christ, Superstar!” July 20-21 at the Paramount Theatre, Middletown.

The first annual reunion of the descendants of the late John and Marjorie Price Diehl was held at the Delaware Community Center in Callicoon July 7. Seventy-six family members attended.

Nicole Barna, daughter of Attorney Nicholas and Linda Barna of Tyler Hill, Pa., became the bride of Brett Bixby, son of Howard and Carol Bixby of Clark Summit, Pa., in a ceremony performed at the Honesdale Gospel Tabernacle on June 8, 1996.

Mr. and Mrs. William Moran of Hortonville announce the engagement of their daughter, Deborah Kathleen, to Mr. Charles Goldy, son of Mrs. Ellen Goldy of Rutherford,  N.J. A May 17, 1997 wedding is planned.

A boy, Michael Laurence, was born June 19, 1996 to Dawn and Marc Lieberman of Grahamsville.

A boy, Branden Corey, was born June 11, 1996 to Dawn and Dennis Law of Livingston Manor.

20 Years Ago - 2006

The Antrim Lodge Hotel and Restaurant has gone up in smoke. The historic circa-1890 structure in Roscoe caught fire yesterday around 11:45 a.m. Construction workers discovered smoke pouring down from the top floors of the building after smelling smoke while they were reinforcing support beams in the basement. The cause is yet undetermined.

A total of 45 boys and girls caught 295 fish at the Youth Fishing Derby held Saturday at DeHoyos Park in Monticello. The event was sponsored by the Monticello Parks and Recreation Department and the Federation of Sportsmen’s Clubs of Sullivan County. 

The Tusten Chiefs capped off a stellar 17-4 season with a dramatic extra-inning win over the rival Honesdale Eagles on Saturday night. The 9-4 final score was not indicative of how close the game was as the Eagles rallied with two runs in the bottom of the seventh to send the game into extra innings. Leading the Chiefs’ hitting attack were Jeremy DeGori, 2-3 with 3 RBI; Logan Grishaber, 2-4; Torin Frey, 2-4, 1 RBI; Greg MacArthur, 2-4 and Steven Steffens, 2-4 with 2 RBI. The team is sponsored by the Narrowsburg Fire Department. 

10 Years Ago - 2016

Gary Greenwald passed away on Tuesday at the age of 71, surrounded by his wife Diane, their three children, his beloved dogs Winston, Teddy, Murphy, Sweetie and their cat Bogey. Raised in Wurtsboro, Greenwald attended a four-room school house for much of his childhood and was one of three sons to Jacob and Florence Greenwald, owners of the Wurtsboro Pharmacy. While both of his older brothers became registered pharmacists like their parents, Greenwald took a different route, graduating with a degree in Political Science and later from Brooklyn Law School, after which he opened his first office in Wurtsboro. 

The joint installation of the 2016/2017 Officers of Liberty Lodge #521 and Monticello Lodge #532, Free and Accepted Masons was held Monday at Liberty Masonic Lodge in Liberty. Installed officers for both Lodges plus New York State Grand Lodge Officers in attendance were Luis Diaz; Richard Morley, Senior Grand Warden of the State of New York; Charles Paty; Mark Raven; Roy Warden; James Richardson; Franklyn Laufersweiler, District Deputy Grand Master of the Sullivan Masonic District; Robert Halprin; Frank Wayman; Stephen Gruber; Leonel Cortizo; George Keiser; Nicholas Torres; and Joseph Beirne.
