Three old settlers were called to rest this week. Wm. Gardner, 67, of Hortonville died at his home, June 4, 1926, as the result of a paralytic stroke suffered the evening before. He is survived by a son, former District Attorney of Sullivan County Henry F. Gardner of Callicoon, three sisters and a brother.
Anna E. Toussaint Ness, 62, died at home in the afternoon of June 4, 1926. She was the widow of George Ness.
Fredericka Hoehn, 78, of the Beechwoods died at her home May 30, 1926, due to the afflictions of old age. She is survived by her husband, Michael Hoehn, two daughters, Barbara Wessar of Rochester and Mrs. Elizabeth Hartz of Callicoon and grandchildren.
The sale of poppies for the benefit of the veterans was very successful with $65 being cleared. Credit is due to Freda Hartz, Ruby Sodawater, Mary Esther Hallday and Margaret Hallday, all local, and Harriet Steffens of North Branch for the success of the sale.
Cadet Frank Leonard Bock, class of 1928, United States Military Academy, West Point, son of Leonard E. Bock, Callicoon, will spend 2 1/2 months furlough following graduation Saturday morning of the Class of 1926. This is the longest leave granted to a cadet during his four years.
There will be a box social and dance held at the Hankins Community House June 19, given by the Hankins Delaware Valley Band and the Community House to help toward getting electric lights for the Club House.
The Hotel Shady Dell of Hankins will hold dances every Wednesday beginning this week. The Texas Rangers will furnish music.
ADV.–The plumbing business formerly conducted by Cade & Hunt in the Kautz Building, Callicoon, will now be conducted by G.R. Hunt.
90 Years Ago - 1936
John J. Dowd, a member of the senior class in the Callicoon High School, has just been informed that he has been awarded a cash scholarship in Columbia College. John plans to study surgery.
The fourth annual Spring Recital of piano music by pupils of Gladys V. Bergner was held at her home on June 6. Eighteen pupils from North Branch, Hankins, Mileses and Callicoon performed. After the performance, tea was served with Mrs. William Hartz of Callicoon and Mrs. Bart Cargin of Mileses pouring.
The dry weather for the past several weeks is ruining many lawns in the area but Wm. Nudorf, superintendent of the Callicoon Water Co., reports that the village supply is holding up well.
Dr. Ralph L. Spaulding of Monticello and Miss Ida Willis, his dental assistant, were married in New York City last week.
Congratulations to the newlyweds, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hartmann of East Cochecton.
Frank Freuchtl has just completed a chicken house on his property on the Bethlehem Road, Callicoon Center.
Kenneth Tate, Class of 1935 Callicoon High School, was recently elected to Skull and Bones, an honorary society of the student organization in New York University.
Irma Gamrak, an 8th grade pupil, ranked among the first eight in a statewide poster contest for pupils in schools in cities of less than 25,000 population. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Gamrak of Fremont Center.
80 Years Ago - 1946
Discharged from the service recently were Lieut. George Henke, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Henke, and Donald Molusky, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Molusky. Both men served in the U.S. Navy.
The Department of New York Jewish War Veterans and Auxiliary held their convention at Swan Lake with more than 1,500 delegates registered.
Congratulations to Miss Alice Hagenow, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hagenow, Delaware Ave., and John Moore, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Moore of Galilee who were married June 9 at St. Joseph’s Seminary.
Thomas R. Geib, 24, was buried in Holy Cross Cemetery on June 8. He was a veteran of World War II and the recipient of the Purple Heart citation through his service with the U.S. Marine Corps.
Jennie M. Hillriegel passed away in her 69th year in Middletown on May 28. Mrs. Minnie Schick, 74, widow of Alfred Schick, passed away at her home in Callicoon Center on Monday, June 10.
The engagement of Miss Loramay Sickles to Alfred Couch Jr. of Woodridge, was announced by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Weiss of Monticello.
Dr. George R. Mills and Dr. Edmund T. Rumble announce the relocation of their offices to the building on the corner of Church and Hospital Streets.
At the theater it was Orson Welles, Claudette Colbert and George Brent in “Tomorrow is Forever,” with a Donald Duck cartoon, news and other selected short subjects.
70 Years Ago - 1956
Howard W. Hermann, son of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Hermann, was graduated as an electrical engineer from Clarkson College of Technology on June 3.
Miss Marcia Lou Traynor, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Traynor, and Miss Janet Dorrer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Audley Dorrer, received Bachelor of Science degrees from Russell Sage College in exercises held June 3. Marcia majored in nursing and Janet pursued a home economics career. Both girls were named Kellas scholars for scholastic excellence in the first semester of their Senior year, the college’s highest academic honor based upon a semester’s work.
Edwin J. Robisch has been appointed superintendent of the Kent division of the Erie Railroad. He is a native of Callicoon and started with the Erie as a clerk in the Jersey City yards in 1928.
The ladies bowling on the Ohls Hatchery team have been notified of winning $88 in the national tournament held in Miami, Fla., last month. On the team are Lucia Sprague, Ruth Dorrer, Gloria Buddenhagen, Anna Gettle and Lee Adam. All won individual prize monies in the singles and doubles. Gloria Buddenhagen and her partner, Josephine McDonald, won in the doubles.
Miss Madolin Fink was guest of honor at three bridal showers recently. She will become the bride of Arthur Tenbus on June 9.
Miss Nancy Meyer of Pea Brook had the honor of crowning the statue of the Blessed Virgin during the annual May crowning at St. Patrick’s in Long Eddy. Joseph Rasulo was the crown bearer.
Erwin Baker of the Emmett Turner Post 276, Jeffersonville, was elected commander of the Sullivan County American Legion at the annual convention held in Yulan on June 3.
60 Years Ago - 1966
The Rite of Confirmation was administered at the Jeffersonville First Lutheran Church on June 5 to Donald Monus, Diane Krantz, Roy Streever, Joyce McMahon, Cheryl Hendrix, Patricia Eggler, Helen Sanftleben, Wendy Krum and Linda Ahnstrom by Rev. Peter Elstad.
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Williams of Greenville, Pa., were honored on the occasion of their 25th wedding anniversary with an open house at the Galilee Grange Hall on May 29.
Jesse Conklin of Lapeer, a former resident of the Callicoon area, suffered serious injuries when he was gored by a young bull on his farm May 23. Mr. Conklin is coming along well but for a time was in severe pain from the accident.
Thomas Kennedy, operator of Kennedy’s Korners, Lake Huntington, died suddenly on June 1. Mrs. Cora Kohler of Kenoza Lake died June 6 at the Callicoon Hospital, aged 86.
In the editorial it was noted that the Erie-Lackawanna Railroad has petitioned the I.C.C. to remove two more passenger trains from its main line. “Our opposition notwithstanding, it is only a matter of time until no passenger service is available on the Erie,” stated the editor.
50 Years Ago - 1976
Barbara Schumacher is the recipient of an Outstanding Student Award at Sullivan County Community College in the Mental Health Assisting Program.
The 1975 Dairy Princess, Susan Fulton of Kenoza Lake, relinquished her crown Friday evening at the June Dairy Dinner held at King’s in the Manor when she crowned Michele Brooks of North Branch as the 1976 Sullivan County Dairy Princess.
Peter Gozza of Liberty graduated Rochester Institute of Technology and University of Miami with a Bachelor’s degree in finance. His sister, Terri Gozza, graduated State University at Oneonta with a Bachelor’s degree in elementary education. They are the children of Liberty Supervisor and Mrs. Peter Gozza.
Rev. and Mrs. Ralph Madill were given a surprise “goodbye” party at the Kenoza Lake Fire Hall on June 5, upon the completion of their ministry on the Kenoza Lake charge.
Eileen Hector and Michael Milani were crowned Queen and King of the Narrowsburg Junior Prom.
40 Years Ago - 1986
For the second time in a month, Fallsburg voters turned down a proposed $7.48 million school budget. The board will meet on June 21 to see what their options are and what route to take.
Dr. Kunwar Nagpal and his wife, Dr. Ram D. Phull are expanding their dental practice in Narrowsburg and plan to open an office there on or about July 1. According to Dr. Nagpal, their interest grew in the community when they attended the Health Fair sponsored by the Lions Club and Dr. Phull did free oral cancer screening for over a hundred participants.
Associate Professor of Electronics and Computer Technology Samuel J. Kramer, a Liberty native, has been recognized as the Outstanding Faculty Member in the Division of Engineering Technology in the College of Engineering, Architecture and Technology at OSU. He joined the faculty in 1978 after 20 years in the U.S. Army as a specialist in electronic warfare and intercept system.
Robert Chapman is the new owner of the Jay Dreher Supply Co. of Roscoe. The store, bought from Robert and Jayne Dreher, changed ownership May 22.
Mr. and Mrs. William Gager of Galilee were honored on their 45th wedding anniversary with a party at the Unity Grange Hall in Galilee. Over 200 friends and relatives came to greet them.
Governor Mario Cuomo spoke at the Jeffersonian Dinner held Saturday night at the Concord Hotel in Kiamesha Lake, attended by nearly 600 people.
Sabahat Kubakei and his wife, Ekrem, are the new owners of Ted’s Restaurant in Jeffersonville.
Joe Gombita of Hortonville shot a 19 lb. 2 oz. turkey which had a 9 1/2 inch beard and 1 1/4 inch spurs. John Pilny called in the bird. In the Democrat contest, Harry Wingert of Callicoon topped all the entries with a 22 lb. 2 oz. trophy.
30 Years Ago - 1996
County Manager Jonathan Drapkin joined the Sullivan County Partnership’s Executive Board for his first meeting with the business development group.
The county’s grand opening of the Sullivan County Area Farmers’ Market was a huge success. Over 1,000 people attended and many local vendors were very pleased with the turnout.
Catskills’ IDEA kicked off its downtown revitalization effort in style this weekend with Monticello’s Broadway, the County Courthouse lawn, and a 40 x 120-foot tent as its venue. A parade, street fair, non-stop entertainment, art deco auction, children’s show and a gala ball highlighted the two-day festival.
The engagement of Kelly A. Connors to Kevin J. O’Shea, son of John and Janey O’Shea of Lake Forrest, Calif., has been announced by the future bride’s parents, Brian and Mary Ellen Connors of Jeffersonville.
Dorothy and Maurice Leach of Fremont Center announce the wedding of their son, Clifford Arthur Leach, to Marion Trager of Schweinfurt, Germany, on May 23, 1996. The bride’s parents are Brigitte and Juergen Trager of Bamberg, Germany.
Jean Schuberth of Smallwood announces the engagement of her daughter, Christine Schuberth, to Keith DeGregory, son of Gilbert and Loretta DeGregory of Shoreham, L.I. A June 1997 wedding is planned.
A daughter, Hayley Elise was born to Michael and Tracy Puerschner of Jeffersonville at the Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale, Pa.
Nana’s House Child Care Center Inc. had its grand opening in Liberty and Monticello on June 12.
On Friday night Baxter Field in Mountaindale was opened up to the fans with free admission as the Catskill Cougars of the North Atlantic Baseball League took on the Monticello Rockies of the Hudson Valley Rookies League. The final score was 14-1 in the Cougars’ favor as they took advantage of a horrid defense effort by the amateurs.
20 Years Ago - 2006
Monticello senior Katie Mahan’s painting of a female green-winged teal duck earned her second place in New York State in this year’s Federal Junior Duck Stamp Contest. The competition garnered more than 750 entries.
Congregation Khal Bnei Zion Inc. of Brooklyn, the group trying to purchase the Raleigh Hotel, has plans to turn the longtime resort into a summer camp and religious school for children, using the hotel for boarding and other activities. In all likelihood, they will be off the tax rolls as well. Their plans were presented to the Town of Fallsburg Planning Board on Thursday.
Carol Smythe, president of the Time and the Valleys Museum in Grahamsville, announced the receipt of a Get Ready grant to help the museum begin the strategic planning process.
More than 100 golfers spent several hours Saturday at Tarry Brae Golf Course, playing 18 holes of golf in weather conditions that made it feel more like October. The Jake Classic Golf Outing was established as a way to honor the late Jacob “Jake” E. Gunther III, who represented the 98th District in the New York State Assembly until his untimely passing in July 2003. The team representing the Orange County Probation Department won the Jake Cup Trophy.
10 Years Ago - 2016
The Magical History Tour has come of age. Now in its 21st year, the narrated architectural/historical bus tour to sight-see, museum hop, and hear about Sullivan County’s storied past and present will host two tours led by Sullivan County Historian John Conway and Liberty/ NYC architect Robert Dadras in 2016.
Leadership Sullivan is a group of Sullivan County residents that come together to learn about the county and help to make it a better place. People take time off from work to meet for classes throughout the year, expanding their knowledge further than just their profession. Vincent Galligan III, the current chairman of the Sullivan County Chamber Foundation Board, announced he was stepping down from his position but plans to stay on the board. He talked about a new idea in the works for Leadership Sullivan – a program for high school students that would provide young adults with an opportunity to network with leaders in the county as well as be mentored by them.
Charles A. Obst of Swan Lake died Saturday at the age of 99.
Arlyene Meyer Lusk, a native of Long Eddy who was employed as a contractor at NASA for over 30 years, passed away unexpectedly June 2.
Tito Walter Guglielmone of Callicoon (previously of Oakdale, Long Beach, Mastic Beach and New York, New York) died June 11. He was almost 81.
