LIBERTY – On Friday night, the Liberty Redhawks hosted a quad meet, hosting Monticello, Chester, and Middletown. The fierce competition displayed by every athlete shows just how much girls’ high school wrestling has grown since 2018. More than half the schools in Sullivan County now have female wrestling teams, which also includes Fallsburg and Sullivan West, who were not scheduled to participate in this meet. The host school’s Head Coach Brian Vaughn said of his team’s performance, “This season started out a little bit rough, but as the season went on, and we started progressing. All our girls have winning records right now, so I’m happy about that. There are still some adjustments to be made before sectionals; becoming more comfortable on offense, clearing ties, but overall, I like how we’re more confident.”

In a powerful display of sportsmanship and respect, members of the boys’ teams from both Liberty and Monticello were present to cheer on their teammates, showcasing a community united in support of girls wrestling. The Redhawks are scheduled to be back on the mat on Monday, February 2, in Onteora, while the Panthers currently have no scheduled upcoming events.
