Liberty discusses proposed cannabis business

LIBERTY – Security concerns surrounding a proposed cannabis microbusiness in White Sulphur Springs, and preparations for the town’s upcoming budget process were among the matters discussed by the Liberty Town Board at its latest meeting.

The board reviewed correspondence notifying the town that Robert J. O’Neill, doing business as Operator Canna Co., has applied to the New York State Office of Cannabis Management to operate a cannabis microbusiness with retail authorization at 3195 State Route 52 in White Sulphur Springs.

Board members said their concerns centered primarily on security at the property and its location near a residential neighborhood, with councilmember Vincent McPhillips expressing that “it’s definitely not secure.”

Members questioned whether the property’s existing fencing would meet security requirements and discussed contacting the appropriate state agencies for additional information.

Supervisor Frank DeMayo questioned whether the proposed operation would need to appear before the Planning Board. It was noted that the town does not currently have a specific definition for cannabis growing, but the use could fall under existing agricultural regulations and that the applicant would still be required to come before the town.

Other business included authorizing the demolition and removal of an unsafe building at 3575 State Route 52.

Following the discussion was an approval for up to $6,050 for network cybersecurity upgrades. The board then approved hiring Zoe Scott as a temporary clerk for up to four months to assist the town in pursuing Bronze designation through the Climate Smart Communities Program.

As the town begins preparing its next budget, board members discussed holding separate budget meetings beginning in October. Officials noted that several departments had not yet submitted their budget information, potentially complicating the process.
