Little League President talks Challenger League

The Tri-Valley Little League is planning to expand its programs next year, with discussions underway for a Challenger League — a program designed to give children with disabilities the opportunity to participate in baseball.

Updating the Neversink Town Board during its monthly public meeting, League President Larry Whipple outlined the proposal, which would see the Little League reach out to local organizations such as New Hope, The Arc Greater Hudson Valley and the Center for Discovery as it works toward establishing the new program.

The proposed league would expand the organization’s offerings beyond its traditional divisions, creating another opportunity for local youth to play baseball.

Tri-Valley Little League already serves hundreds of local children, with Whipple estimating that approximately 242 players participated during its most recent season.

Away from the diamond, the organization continues to support local families and community programs. Its efforts include providing summer snack packs for children, organizing Thanksgiving dinners, assisting families facing hardships and donating to school and youth programs.

The league also helped subsidize participation in its summer camp with Frozen Ropes, making the program more affordable for families. Approximately 48 children participated in the camp.

Volunteer support remains central to the organization’s operations. Its volunteers include both parents of children enrolled in the league and community members whose children do not participate.

The proposed Challenger League would further expand the organization’s outreach to families and children throughout the community. However, with the program still in the planning stages, details such as its structure, schedule and registration process have not yet been publicly announced.
