Mamakating Library announces New Seed Library

WURTSBORO – The Mamakating Library is excited to announce a new offering! We noticed how much our community loves our gardening programs and the Friends of the Library decided to undertake the project of starting a Seed Library. This is a community-centered initiative to encourage small residential gardeners on a mission for more sustainable living. Together we are connecting with nature, beautifying our community, and helping to combat hunger locally. Our seed library is currently stocked with vegetable, herb, native flower, and fruit seeds. All of the flower seeds are native to our area and all seeds have been donated by local businesses or farms. The demand is clear already with over 100 seed packets distributed in just the first week of operation.

The Seed Library is free and open to the public any time during library business hours. No library card is required. Visitors may take up to five packets of any type per visit. No further commitment is required of patrons, however, if you are interested in saving seeds from your crop, we’d love if you’d donate some back to the seed library for next years restocking. Brochures available at the library explain the seed saving process. The library plans on providing more educational materials (video, classes, etc.) for patrons throughout the growing season.

For more information about the seed library and any of our programs visit our website or follow us on Facebook or Instagram using the handle @mamakatinglibrary. All library programs are free and open to the public. The Mamakating Library is located at 128 Sullivan Street in Wurtsboro.
