WURTSBORO — The Town Board of Mamakating was proud to welcome a new face to the lineup of troopers next to the Town Hall as Sergeant Eddy Donohue took on the role as Station Commander following the promotion of the position’s former holder, Mary Cadet.
Donohue affirmed that he will continue to keep the trend of success that Cadet has maintaind.
Donohue was born and raised in Middletown but has “a lot of enjoyment” being down in Mamakating.
“One of the things I see and I fall in love with more and more is that there’s a sense of community here,” Donohue pointed out. “That’s something you don’t see in too many places now, so I definitely look to be a part of that.”
He is looking to make the Town roadways safer. He stated that, upon doing the math earlier that day, he found that from last year to this year, there’s been an increase in DWI (Driving While Intoxicated) enforcement 75 percent.
“It’s to make sure you guys can get from point A to point B safely and accordingly,” stated Donohue.
He told the public that if they ever need him, he can be reached at the station next to the Town Hall and he “doesn’t bite” and will talk to anybody about “absolutely anything.”
“Anyway I can help, I would love to do so,” said Donohue.
Town Supervisor Michael Robbins wanted to thank Donohue because ever since he’s been at the station, he’s been a big help.
“Anything that has happened here, you’ve been right on top of it, so thanks for coming and we look forward to working with you.”
‘Goodie Maier Day’
Councilman Matt Mordas acknowledged the celebration a couple Sundays ago of Gladys “Goodie” Maier’s centennial celebration on December 8th.
Mordas, who knows her personally, acknowledged the uniqueness in celebrating a 100th birthday in the area.
Mordas dubbed her a “pillar of our community”.
“We had a celebration in her modest home. It was pretty crowded in there,” recounted Mordas.
The celebration saw the presence of Wurtsboro VFW, the American Legion, and some neighbors and family.
On the Town’s part, Robbins and the Town proclaimed December 8th Sunday as ‘Goodie Maier Day’ throughout the Town of Mamakating.
“It was a joyous and sometimes poignant celebration,” recounted Mordas. “We heard stories of her late husband Edward and their efforts to organize and create the VFW in Mamakating back in 1946.”
Mordas also warmly reminisced of Edward Maier and Goodie’s efforts to support Veteran’s causes and other causes within the community.
One of Goodie’s efforts “no recently” was working to secure a spot on the list of National Registry of Historic Landmarks for the Community Church of Wurtsboro.
“I want to thank Supervisor Robbins for the proclamation ... I wish Maier much health and many more birthdays in the future,” stated Mordas.
