LIVINGSTON MANOR – It was a brisk January night last Monday when the Livingston Manor Wildcats hosted the Seward Spartans for a boys basketball matchup.

It was a tough game but the Wildcats were able to secure the 50-43 home court win over the Spartans.

Ben Johnson was the top scorer for Manor with 20 points.

“[It was a] Great team win and we had great defense tonight, Coach Charlie Hicks said. “We rotated through our team and we were able to hit big shots when we needed to.”

The first quarter opened with Manor’s defense in full form, getting multiple early stops to give them more chances at the basket.

Manor ended the first quarter with 7 points, down by three points behind Seward’s 10.

Seward opened the second quarter with a big steal into an open layup as Manor was inbounding the ball to widen their lead 12-7 over Manor. But Manor quickly came back on a 8-point run to take a 15-12 lead. Seward was able to score a couple times and retain a tie again with two minutes left before halftime. However, Manor went into the half with a bang. They sank multiple threes in the final minutes, including #11 with a buzzer beater, to put them up 24-20 going into the half.

Manor opened up the third quarter with an early forced turnover into a classic pass and cut drive by Ben Johnston to put them up 26-20 over Seward. Manor was playing very aggressively and it was paying off through multiple forced turnovers but they also had three fouls in the first three minutes.

Seward started to close the lead somewhat towards the middle of the third quarter. But Manor finished strong and was able to end the quarter 36-28 over Seward.

The Spartans drew first blood in the fourth quarter with a seal off layup in the paint. It was a 6-point game with 7 minutes on the clock.

Seward then went on a 6-point run in the next two minutes to tie the score at 36-36 with four minutes left.

But Manor’s Johnston had something to say about that and drained a deep three in his opponent’s face to put Manor back on top.

Seward responded with their own three to tie it up again at 39-39. The Wildcats took the lead off two big defensive turnovers near their basket putting them up 43-41 over the Spartans.

Then Manor’s Tyler McCray hit a crucial three-pointer to give them a three point lead with less than a minute left in the game.

Seward fought hard to try to get the ball back after a critical turnover but Manor didn’t give them the chance and finished the game 50-43 over Seward.
