Family, friends and community members gathered on Friday, June 27, at Achieve Rehab and Nursing Facility to celebrate the life and legacy of Richard “Dick” Martinkovic; a cherished lifelong resident of the Town of Liberty. The occasion marked the official dedication of the Martinkovic Memorial Rehab Unit in his honor.

Martinkovic, who resided at Achieve from 2023 until his passing on February 7 of this year, was known not only for his distinguished career but also for his unwavering commitment to the community. His lifetime of public service and deep-rooted connection to Liberty had a profound impact on many—a sentiment echoed throughout the ceremony.

Spirits were high as Ryan Wood, administrator at Achieve and facilitator of the dedication, invited attendees to share memories in Martinkovic’s honor. 

Numerous individuals stepped forward with heartfelt stories—each unique, yet similar in the way they described Martinkovic: generous, humorous and above all, deeply devoted to those around him.

Sullivan County Sheriff Mike Schiff was one of the guests who spoke on Martinkovic’s behalf, calling him “a public servant who cared about the community and cared about the people.” Others reflected on the warmth, humility, and dedication that marked his years of service and friendship.

When asked what the dedication meant to her and her family, Janet Martinkovic, Dick’s widow, responded tearfully, “the support that we’ve gotten has been outstanding.”

The ceremony concluded with the unveiling of a plaque bearing Martinkovic’s photo, which will now hang in the 2 West Unit—officially renamed the Martinkovic Memorial Rehab Unit. Loved ones gathered for the final installation, marking a permanent tribute to a man whose legacy continues to inspire.

Richard “Dick” Martinkovic’s impact will live on—not only within the walls of the rehab unit that was renamed in his honor, but in every life he touched throughout his own time in Liberty.
