CALLICOON –– Starting in early May, the Villa Roma Tuesday Night Men’s Golf League is comprised of 32 teams, 2 divisions of 16 teams. There are 15 regular season divisional matches and four weeks of playoffs. The top 8 teams in each division (A) playoffs battle it out until there is one team left standing.
The playoffs for the Villa Roma Tuesday Night Men’s Golf League wrapped up this past Tuesday with Joe Meyer and John Meyer defeating Mike Allen and Craig Schumacher in the championship match. The championship match comprised of Joe Meyer (0 handicap) vs Mike Allen (5 handicap) and John Meyer (3 handicap) vs Craig Schumacher (11 handicap) in match play format. Playing the back 9, the match started with split points from both matches on hole 10.
With Joe and Mike splitting points the next few holes, John gave Team Meyer the lead winning holes 11,12,14 while splitting points with Craig on 13 and 15. With split points from both matches on hole 16, Meyer and Meyer had a 2-point lead heading into 17. Not going down without a fight, on the 175-yard par 3 17th, Mike Allen stepped up and hit his tee shot to two feet, making birdie and winning the point from Joe, who got up and down for par. With an answer of his own, John Meyer stepped up on 17 and hit his tee shot to three feet, making the putt for birdie and winning another hole vs Schumacher.
On the match’s final hole and a 2-point lead for Joe and John Meyer, all they needed was a ½ point to secure the victory. On the par 5 18th, both Joe and John chipped close to the hole for ‘tap-in’ birdies, securing the victory and being named the 2025 Golf League Champions.
The third-place match of the (A) playoffs finished with Bill Phillips and Ryan Phillips defeating Bill VonAhnen and Jim Dannic.
he (B) playoffs ended with Chris Marston and Dennis Brockner defeating Steve Greenwald and Cody Quick in a tight match. Marston and Brockner got up early on Greenwald and Quick but Greenwald and Quick battled back tying the match heading to 17 tee.
With a par from Marston to secure a point, Brockner chipped in from the ruff for birdie winning the hole and going up 2 points headed to the par 5 18th. With Greenwald and Quick both needing to win a point on 18 to force a playoff, Marston and Brockner both put their third shots on the green, two putting for par and ending the match.
