BARRYVILLE – Barryville-based writer and musician Mike Edison will be singing selections from his ongoing “Gospel from the Garage” project, including original folk blues, Old Testament story songs, spirituals, and protest songs.
Edison is genuine rock’n’roll renaissance man, an acclaimed author and musician who has toured the world relentlessly, singing and playing blues, gospel, and garage punk, and whose bestselling books have covered wide-ranging topics including all facets of the American counterculture.
His energetic “Gospel from the Garage” song cycle goes beyond the typical definition of “gospel” to embrace unfiltered, primitive rock’n’roll rhythms.
At the Barryille Church, Edison will accompany himself on guitar and piano, and present original compositions along with uncovered traditionals to create a visceral and inspirational concert experience. The music is sometimes sweaty and gritty, often emotionally raw.
Many of these songs were written over one hundred years ago and were revived during the Civil Rights era as songs of freedom, empowerment, and revolution, recorded by artists such as Bob Dylan, Odetta, the Staple Singers, Woody Guthrie, and more. “Gospel from the Garage” is high-octane Americana for the twenty-first century, informed by our greatest folk-blues traditions.
Says Edison: “It’s a real thrill to be able to sing these songs in an historic church, along the river, just down the hill from my house. Rock’n’roll started in the church, and moved to the garage. Now I’m going through the looking glass, bringing it all back home.”
This exciting event takes place on Saturday, November 23, 4 PM, at Barryville United Methodist Church, 3405 NY-97, Barryville, NY 12719.
All Proceeds To Local Food Pantries.
