Monticello Faces Tough 10-0 Loss to Washingtonville

MONTICELLO – It was an overcast but calm day Tuesday morning as Monticello took to the field against Washingtonville for their second game of the season. It was also Monticello’s second game of the season, and they were hungry after a 13-3 loss to Port Jervis. Unfortunately for them, the Panthers were unable to secure the home win over Washingtonville losing 10-0 to the Wizards.

Monticello came close to getting a quick 3 out inning to open the game. Pitcher, Landin Raynor, was able to get a quick initial strikeout followed by a pop fly that was picked up in the outfield. Washingtonville quickly hit back-to-back singles to get runners on bases. After two errors on the mound for the Panthers, Washingtonville went up 2-0 before the Panthers secured the final strikeout in the inning. Monticello drilled a single upfield that turned into a stolen double for a solid opening at bat. With two outs and runners on second and third, Monticello had a good chance to tie the score but unfortunately, they couldn’t bring it home and their final batter grounded out at first. Monticello earned a quick 3 outs to end the top of the second without giving the Wizards any chances to score. The Panthers also went scoreless in the inning. Only advancing a runner to third base before their third out.

Washingtonville was able to hit big in the third inning with a double followed by a deep triple with an RBI to make it 3-0 for the Wizards. They followed this with two more doubles with another two RBIs. It didn’t look promising for the Panthers if they didn’t stop the Wizards’ momentum or build some of their own. But Washingtonville wasn’t going to allow that easily and put up two strikeouts in a row.

Neither team had any notable at bats again until the top of the 6th, when Washingtonville hit back-to-back singles, scoring twice off of two stolen bases to gain a 7-0 lead. They followed this with two more quick runs to finish out the game 10-0 over the Panthers.

Panthers’ Coach Rick Vreeland had this to say after the loss, “We fought hard the entire way, we just have to keep building on the small things.”

Monticello’s home game scheduled for Thursday, April 2 against Warwick was canceled due to the rainy weather affecting field conditions.
