Monticello prepares winter snowplow fleet

MONTICELLO – As the summer months come to a close, the Village of Monticello is already gearing up for the upcoming winter season, while Village Manager James Snowden also highlighted short-term rentals and other housing-related concerns during last Wednesday night’s village board meeting.

During his Village Manager’s Report, Snowden updated the board on a multitude of matters, including efforts to identify Airbnb-style rentals and sobriety housing operating within the village.

The village has begun working to identify these properties and ensure they are complying with applicable building and zoning requirements.

“Parking on the sidewalk and front yards are unacceptable,” Snowden stressed, also stating that “short term rentals [are] forbidden in the village.”

In February of this year, the board voted to ban residential rentals under 30 days within the village.

Additionally, work is underway for the upcoming winter season, as the Highway Department prepares its snowplow fleet.

Included in that work are extensive repairs being undertaken on older trucks to make sure they meet the necessary standards and pass inspection, all with the exception of one.

“[That] truck has a blown motor, which I will not replace,” Snowden said. “It’s not worth it.”

Snowden also confirmed that the Highway Department is hard at work identifying potential locations for speed bumps.

Among these locations are Waverly, York and Lakewood avenues, which have been marked for inspection. Installation will commence once the necessary approval is received.

Speaking of road bumps, the pool at DeHoyos Park has cleared a major hurdle, as the Health Department–as well as Village Engineer Glenn Smith–both gave their approval. However, Snowden added that further work still needs to be completed on the pool house and bathrooms.
