110 Years Ago - 1915

In property at the lower end of the village, formerly owned by Peter Mathern, and later by Attorney Robert B. McGinn, has been sold to Mrs. Charles Heidt of Youngsville.

Gernet Howland has sold his garage and machine shop business  at Callicoon to O.E.Vanetta of Neweiden, who takes possession April 1. Mr. Howland says he is going to retire which means, we presume, until he finds another opening that appeals to him.

Mrs. Mary Hauser of New York, widow of the late  J. Balser Hauser of Jeffersonville, is contesting the probate of her husband’s will.

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court last week handed down an unanimous decision reversing, with cost, the decision of County Surrogate Smith in the determination of the construction and effect of a disposition of property contained in the will of Bridget Haddock, deceased, of the Town of Cochecton.

Dr. and Mrs. Adolph H. Schonger of North Branch celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary November 12. Many of their friends planned a celebration on the quiet, and took the bride and groom of 25 years by complete surprise.

Jesse Mauer of Beechwoods and Miss Mary Bartel of Fremont Center were married at the bride’s home on November  10th.

John Dering of Callicoon came across a 160-pound buck deer between Callicoon and Cochecton on Saturday and brought the game down with his .30-06 rifle. The buck was walking slowly when John shot, and it continued to walk on slowly for about 100 feet.

100 Years Ago - 1925

Sullivan County has grown  by leaps and bounds during the past five years, making one of the greatest records in this respect in its entire history. In the past five years, it has added no less than 7,029 residents, giving it a population today of 40,192.

Dr. and Mrs. Cornelius Duggan of Bethel are preparing to leave soon for Europe, where they will spend several months.

Charles I. and Clifford S. Walsh, as administrators of the estate of Richard Walsh, late of Brooklyn, have commenced through their attorney, John D. Lyons of Monticello, an action against the New York, Ontario and Western Railway Co., in the Kings County Supreme Court for $100,000 damages for the killing of Mr. Walsh, their father, in Roscoe, in February last, by train No. 9.

The lot on which formerly stood the old Kenoza Lake Hotel in Kenoza Lake will be sold in partition sale at the courthouse. The hotel building on the lot burned down a couple of years ago after George DeLap had sold the property to Vasil Syirsk and Jacob and Sarah Silverberg.

Irving Markowsky and Abe Roth are having a car fitted up as a lunch wagon which they will take to Miami for the winter, leaving here today and New York on Sunday next. According to reports, Florida is so crowded for accommodations that it would be well for everyone who goes there to take their own lunch and sleeping outfit.

Nathan Smith, the Kenoza Lake creamery man, died suddenly Thursday morning, November 12.

At a meeting held recently in White Sulphur Springs, a committee including M.H. Hanofee, Edward Everett and Charles Massopust was appointed to arrange for the proposed fire district.

90 Years Ago - 1935

Harry Mathern still feels the bumps he received in that election bet wheelbarrow ride he was given last Thursday night by Fred Dedling. Bill  Miller, carrying a red light, was marshal of the parade, which started at Mathern’s home and ended at Bucky’s Inn.

At a meeting of the board of directors of the Sullivan County Cooperative Dairy Association, held recently, William VonBerg was unanimously appointed manager to succeed the late Valentine Scheidell. Fred Miller continues as president and Carl Stecker as secretary-treasurer.

The body of Miss Dorothy Darbee, 35, and daughter of Charles Darbee, prominent Liberty farmer, was found in an unused Liberty reservoir at the foot of Revonah Mountain, back of the Darbee farm.

A daughter was born November 12th to Mr. and Mrs. Fulton of Kenoza Lake.

Among the hunters— John Mages of the village got a 180 pound buck on the opening day near Ten Mile River in Tusten; George Puerschner of Kenoza Lake got a nine pointer on the Cherokee Club Preserve; LeRoy got his buck Tuesday in the Tamarack region between Callicoon and Cochecton.

80 Years Ago - 1945

Real Estate doings — Richard and Helen Leonard, who have leased the Harry Locke farm on East Hill, Youngsville, the past two years, have contracted for the purchase of the Richard Segar farm of 40 acres between here and Callicoon Center. William C. Kabat has sold his 40 acre farm and summer boarding house in Fosterdale to Mr. and Mrs. Sattler of New York.

Si Sattinger of the Public Service Garage is opening a new store on Saturday, November 17th. It is characterized as a Goodyear store and the first of its kind in  Sullivan County. The store will carry a full line of Goodyear tires and tubes and other auto accessories, as well as supplies for the home, including toys for the kiddies.

Three officers of the Delaware Express Company, Hankins, were arrested by FBI agents in NYC on charging growing out of the theft more than a year ago of a Railway Express Agency trailer, carrying a cargo valued at almost $25,000.

Mr. and Mrs. Valentine Reum Sr. celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary at their home in this village on November 2nd.

Mr. and Mrs. William Weissman of Callicoon Center announce the engagement of their daughter, G. Ruth, to Leslie M. Keeler of Youngsville.

Harry C. Lott, the erstwhile promoter of the Lake Jefferson and Briscoe Lake developments here, is back again in Miami for the winter where he is again selling lots to northern customers.

70 Years Ago - 1955

A daughter, Billie Ann, was born to Shirley (Kohler) and Fred Stabbert Jr. of Callicoon on November 5, at the Callicoon Hospital. She has two older sisters, Kathy Lee and Laurie.

Joseph Beiling, local contractor, currently has in process three jobs for the telephone company. He is constructing an addition to the central office building at Kauneonga Lake, a phone company garage in Liberty, and an addition to the central office in Livingston Manor.

At the annual dinner and dance of the Sullivan County Liquor Dealers Association at the Lighthouse, White Lake, a suction ether unit was presented to Callicoon Hospital. Ferd Schlichting, president of the group, made the presentation to Doctors Mills and Rumble, who accepted the gift on behalf of the hospital.

Miss Shirley Cooper, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Cooper of Youngsville, and Jerome F. Bone of Binghamton, were married on November 5th at St. Francis Church, Youngsville.

Allen Hauser of Youngsville won first prize at the 4-H Barbecue in Liberty for having the largest chickens.

Thomas Edward, infant son of Mr. and Mrs. John Taylor, was baptized at the Methodist Church in Kenoza Lake on Saturday.

Amendment No. 1 for $750 million bond issue for highway construction was defeated. Tied to the approval of the measure were the projects for continued reconstruction of Route 17 and 17B. Both are vital to Sullivan County, since the Thruway-Quickway now ends just above Middletown.

An early morning fire recently, thought to have been caused by a short circuit, destroyed one large truck and burned two tires off another at the Fosterdale quarry.

The Jeff Debate teams, coached by Joseph Strawbridge, triumphantly returned from Hamilton College where they carried off top honors. The A-team tied for first place with a 6-2 score, and the B-team vanquished all opposition with a score of 8-0, for sixteen wins in a row.

Mr. and Mrs. E. Vindigni of the Villa Roma, and children, left on a trip to California.

60 Years Ago - 1965

The trial of Colinzo Wylie, 39, owner of Wylie’s Resort at Lake  Huntington, was in County  Court at Monticello this week before Judge Ben Newberg and a jury. Mr. Wylie, a self-employed presser from Astoria, L.I., is accused of three counts of assault as the result of an altercation at The Nutshell, Lake Huntington, on the morning of November 5, in which John Heib, a bartender, reportedly was shot in the head.

The Town of Delaware Highway Department started work on the Stone Arch Bridge at Kenoza Lake last week to protect it from further deterioration. Brush and weeds were scraped off the surface, sides of the right-of-way were graded to provide for runoff and the top is to be sealed for further protection.

Hunters are in for some good sport when the deer season opens at seven a.m. Monday morning, according to the experts about the county. Bears are also reportedly plentiful.

A two-year cancellation of the Deer Hunt and Archery Meet at Narrowsburg cut into attendance at the 10th annual meet last week, according to reports. However, quality made up for lack of quantity, it was said. Estimates Monday were that approximately 100 bow and arrow hunters took part.

The section of the DeBruce Road between the expressway and old Route 17 in Livingston Manor cannot be integrated into the state system, the Sullivan County Board of Supervisors has been advised by the State Department of Public Works.

The weather this past week has been seasonable. Some rainy days, without too much rain. Some bright clear days.

A Monticello man was one of four Hudson-Delaware Council area scouters honored at the Beech Mountain Camp Food Dinner Sunday night at Grossinger Hotel. A crowd, estimated at 550, the largest ever, attended. The Monticello man was Seymour  Feldberg, Scoutmaster of Troop 83.

John Durr, 90, of Youngsville, died Wednesday at the Liberty-Loomis Hospital. A former innkeeper, he once operated the Hotel Clair in Youngsville.

50 Years Ago - 1975

Last Saturday evening, Miss Sylvia Mitterwager, cashier and trust officer of the United National Bank in Callicoon, was honored by a group of her banking associates at a dinner held at the Eldred Preserve, in honor of her 25 years with the bank.

Miss Linda Lee Doetsch, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene L. Doetsch of Jeffersonville, and David P. Hubert, son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Hubert Sr. of Hankins, were married November 1 at Holy Cross Church in Callicoon.

Two American flags were presented to the Sullivan County Infirmary in Liberty by the Emmett Turner American Legion Post #276, Jeffersonville, in memory of Emmett Turner who was killed in action November 11, 1918, just as the armistice was declared.

Linda Korth, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Korth of Callicoon Center, became the bride of Bernard C. Cost Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Bernard C. Cost Sr. of Endwell, on October 18 at St. George’s R.C. Church in Jeff.

Tom Kobylenski of Callicoon, a letterman center, with a 6-1 record, has been chosen to play basketball for Lehigh University where he is a student.

Denise Brown of Grahamsville and Howard Petro of Bradley were married at the Ulster Heights United Methodist Church on October 25.

40 Years Ago - 1985

Police are conducting an around-the-clock investigation and questioning of more than 25 persons in connection with the first degree assault in the Halloween night shooting of a 12-year-old girl who was struck in the eye while participating in the Monticello parade. An unidentified woman was also struck in the leg while riding in the parade.

Announcement has been made of the engagement of Shelley Jo Siegel, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lee Siegel of Livingston Manor, to Joseph L. Watson of Southern Shores, N.C. A June 1986 wedding is planned. John and Louise Sawchuk of Grahamsville have announced the engagement of their daughter, Cynthia, to Thomas McKenna, son of Catherine McKenna and the late John McKenna, also of Grahamsville. Wedding plans are incomplete.

Wedding bells rang for Jannetta H. Hofstee, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Hofstee of Bethel on September 13, when she became the bride of John B.MacArthur of Bethel at the Kauneonga Lake Methodist Church. Norma Niemann and Steven Lagoda exchanged wedding vows on October 5 at the Community Reformed Church in Youngsville. They are the children of William and Susan Niemann of Youngsville and William and Josephine Lagoda of Fosterdale.

Justin and Jason Haas of Eldred, identical twin sons of Bruce and Rosie Haas, are featured in a new Christmas toy commercial that will debut on network TV on November 11.

Patricia “Pat” Pomeroy of Tennanah Lake was recently appointed president of Eliott and Pomeroy Inc., Realtors, and was honored by friends and associates at a dinner at the Roscoe Diner. She is active in the Sullivan County Board of Realtors, teaches continuing education classes at Sullivan County Community College and works with the Sullivan County Dramatic Workshop.

30 Years Ago - 1995

Loss of power seems to be the reason for the crash of a single-engine plane which happened in the Town of Bethel last Tuesday. Two men from New Jersey were injured while piloting a Vans RV6 Experimental aircraft and practicing takeoffs and landings at the nearby airport less than 1/2 mile away. FAA officials said it would be awhile before final determination of the crash is released.

Gary Nichols, the original host of the Country Club radio show on WVOS in Liberty, is now hosting the WDWD Radio Station at Opryland Theme Park this season, playing ’50s to ’70s music from the back of a pick-up truck.

Junior Division winners of the recent fire poster contest from the Delaware Valley Central School were, first in Junior Division, Sarah Calkin; second, Ian Long; third, Ryann Haberlie; and honorable mention,  Frank Drizhal. In the Senior Division, Alicia Tesseyman was awarded first place, followed by Arlyn Milk, second; and Nicole Gowan, third. In the Jeffersonville-Youngsville Central School, winners in the Junior Division were, first, Derek Valentin and second, Errol Flynn; Senior Division, first Angel Del Valle and second, Christine Sullivan. Both first place winners in J-YCS also captured the first place in their division in the county contest. They each won $25.

Karen Ann Spillane and Harold Edward Russell  III were married September 17 in Long Beach. They are living in Bethel. He is an agent with Farm Family Insurance.

Eileen Bernitt will be formally installed on November 9 as the new postmaster for the U.S. Post Office in Roscoe. A reception is planned for 12:30 p.m. An open house is planned by the postmaster and her staff on Thursday to show what goes on behind the scenes and hear suggestions from customers.

Joe Freda of Kenoza Lake had a book signing of his first novel, “Suburban Guerrillas” at the Delaware Free Library’s Book Fair at the Delaware Youth Center on Saturday. John Peterson of Hankins, the author of “The Littles” series about the special life of anthropomorphic mice, and Rilla Askew of Kauneonga Lake, author of “Strange Business,” a collection of stories about a mythical town in Oklahoma, were also on hand to sign copies of their books.

In  Sullivan County elections, Judge Kane was moved up to the Supreme Court and George Cooke was re-elected County Clerk. It was definite that five Democrats and two Republicans had seats on the County Legislature. District 6 and District 9 Legislators were too close to call until the absentee ballots are counted.

20 Years Ago - 2005

Bernie (Carlson) and Gene Weissman of Callicoon Center celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Saturday, October 22, 2005.

Donnavan Zane and Crystal O’Dell of Milton announce the birth of a son, Charles John, born September 18, 2005 in Poughkeepsie. Maternal grandparents are John and Kerry O’Dell of Milton and Gloria Coll of Kearney, NJ. Paternal grandparents are Janet and David Will of Callicoon Center and Dennis Zane of Beacon.

A girl, Summer Pearl Schmidt, was born August 15, 2005 to Derek and Barbara Ann Schmidt of Parksville in Harris. Maternal grandmother is Barbara Siegel of Parksville. John and Hazel Schmidt of White Sulphur Springs are paternal grandparents. Pearl Asthalter of Liberty is the maternal great-grandmother, and James and Peggy Scott of England are the paternal great-grandparents.

“Bud” and Millie Slausenberg have moved to Boyerstown, Pa. to be near their daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Peter Phillips.

More than 100 walkers particpated in the community-sponsored “Kilometers for Killian” 5K walk in memory of Killian Cain Manto, who died in March 2004 from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.

10 Years Ago - 2015

 

South Fallsburg resident Steve Levine earned accolades for capably continuing the family business, Fallsburg Lumber Company, Inc. Honored by the Mid-Hudson Lumber Dealers Association, Levine received the Lumber Person of the Year Award October 30. Steve began working as the fourth generation of his family at Fallsburg Lumber back in his college days, going full-time after graduating from SUNY Albany with a business management degree in 1976.
