WESTERN SULLIVAN CO. – Celebrate America’s 250th birthday with the Western Sullivan County Library in Divided Loyalties: The Local Impact of the War for Independence. On Wednesday, July 8th at 6:30pm at the Jeffersonville Branch, join Sullivan County Historian John Conway for an informative and riveting talk about the impact of the Revolutionary War on the western part of Sullivan County. Learn about battles, the Delaware River communities, and divided loyalties.
Then on July 28th, it’s Sublimation Art at 5pm at the Callicoon Branch. Join local artist Ari as she teaches you the process of sublimation by making customizable bookmarks and zipper pouches. All supplies are provided but space is limited so please register.
The Callicoon Branch of the Western Sullivan Public Library continues its 2026 Open Mic/Spoken Word series on a new day, the fourth Friday of the month, July 24th. Creative writers ages 16 and up in all genres are invited to read an original poem or short prose piece in a three-minute time slot. Sign up for open mic begins at 5:45 pm, with readings between 6 and 7pm, followed by a reading or performance by guest artists between 7 and 8 pm.
On Thursdays from July 23rd to August 27th at 10am in the Jeffersonville Branch, learn from local player Shirley Buddenhagen how the game of American Mahjong or Mah Jongg is played. Official score cards will be provided from the National Mah Jongg League as well as tile sets. In groups of 4, players will learn scoring, how to make winning hands, the meaning of each tile, and more! This is a 6-week class, so please plan to attend each session. Please register as space is limited. A waiting list will be available.
Friday, July 31st at 5:30pm at the Jeffersonville Branch, join Emmy-nominated host and author Georgia Pellegrini for a special screening of an apple-focused episode of Modern Pioneering on PBS, featuring stories from Sullivan County and the Hudson Valley and the farmers, makers, and traditional foodways that shape this region.
After the screening, guests will explore the flavor of apples through the lens of place, preservation, and craft — then create their own apple-maple shrub, a vinegar-based fruit syrup that can be mixed with sparkling water, tea, cider, or cocktails.
This interactive workshop celebrates the timeless skills of fermentation, preservation, and making something meaningful by hand. Participants will leave with their own apple shrub concentrate to enjoy at home. Learn more about the film here: www.modernpioneering.com.
