LIBERTY- The Liberty RedHawks hosted the O’Neill Raiders in a non-league Volleyball match. Prior to the match starting there was good energy in the gym thanks to a competitive JV contest between the schools.
Set 1 started out as a back-and-forth competitive game. Both teams traded points to a back-and-forth effort close contest. The home RedHawks were led by Julissa Velez, who was a top performer all night. She paced the home team’s effort with solid all-around play around the net, and strong service. Julissa is an athlete to keep an eye on this Fall season in the area. Following the RedHawks early 9-7 lead the visiting Raiders would go on a run to lead them to a 25-14 opening set victory. O’Neill played a consistent all-around set with solid service, passing, hitting and blocking.
Set 2 would start out with a strong start from the Raiders as they would grab an early 13-8 lead in the set. This led to RedHawks Coach Hannold calling a time out. The RedHawks would regroup after the time out to storm back into the set cutting the deficit to 15-13. The Raiders would prove to be too much holding off the mid set run by Liberty taking set 2 25-17.
The final set proved to be some of the best play of the night from both teams. Following a quick 7-3 lead by the Raiders, the RedHawks would answer with a mini run to jump out to a 11-8 lead in the third set. Both teams played hard and battled all contest. However, the Raiders would be too much for the RedHawks to handle as they would take Set 3 25-19.
