he Regional Food Bank is proud to announce that it has teamed up with Hope Kitchen Executive Chef and founder John Doherty and Garnet Health to introduce the next generation of nutritious Shelf Stable Meals that will have a great impact in fighting food insecurity throughout the Hudson Valley.
Regional Food Bank CEO Tom Nardacci and Garnet Health CEO Jonathan Schiller led the public presentation on Friday, October 18 in the lobby of Garnet Health Medical Center Outpatient Building in Middletown to showcase the Hope Kitchen versatile meals that will be available to Regional Food Bank partners, with a special focus on the Food as Medicine program with Garnet Health and area School Backpack programs.
Through Food as Medicine, approximately 5,000 patients managing chronic diseases will receive medically supportive food bags annually at healthcare facilities. Additionally, the School Backpack program provides food to around 5,000 children each week, ensuring they have nutritious meals to enjoy over the weekend when school meals are not available.
“Many people may not realize how much effort the Food Bank puts into sourcing the highest quality food for us to distribute to neighbors in need. Each year for example we distribute 19 million pounds of fruits and vegetables,” said Nardacci “so we are incredibly excited to find partners like Hope Kitchen, who have developed such high quality nutritious and good tasting single serve meals. These cartons are perfect for our Food as Medicine Program, School Back Packs and even at food pantry distributions.
The former executive chef at the New York Waldorf Astoria and the chef-owner of the award-winning Blackbarn restaurants in New York City and the Hudson Valley, Chef Doherty demonstrated the convenience of cooking his Shelf Stable Meals: 3 Bean Chili, Macaroni Bolognese and Red Beans with Rice & Chicken in a skillet and microwave before tasting samples.
“My life had been all about feeding and nourishing people at a very high-end level,”said Doherty. “The whole goal is to get these into the hands of people who need them,” he said. “Is this something you are going to eat every day? No. But when you don’t have the time or the ability to prepare what you get from a food bank, this is definitely a quick fix.”
Kori Rogers, the liaison for the Newburgh Enlarged City School District, said Hope Kitchen meals will benefit close to 450 Newburgh students who have no place to call home. “This partnership helps to reduce the stress. If they can get a healthy meal in their body, they can learn better.”
Moira Mencher, Garnet Health’s Director of Community Relations said, “Our partnership with the Regional Food Bank Hudson Valley has been instrumental in sustaining our Food Farmacy Program, providing vital resources for our patients facing food insecurity. We’re thrilled to expand our efforts by introducing Hope Kitchen’s next generation of ready-to-eat meals, ensuring that nutritious options are always accessible. Starting this month, these meals will be included in our Food Farmacy inventory, further enhancing our commitment to the health and well-being of our community.”
Samantha Monks, Regional Food Bank Director of Health and Nutrition, said the Food as Medicine program ensures that food-insecure patients managing chronic diseases have access to nutritious foods. “Through our partnership with Garnet Health, we reach a diverse group of patients, including those experiencing homelessness, who face additional barriers to access. The Hope Kitchen meals provide a convenient, ready-to-eat option with a balanced nutrition profile, so we don’t have to choose between convenience and health.”
