Soup for Good Brings Local Farms and Community Together This Holiday Season

NARROWSBURG — It takes a village to feed a village.

On Saturday, October 24, the Narrowsburg Farmers’ Market will host Soup for Good, a community fundraiser benefiting the Narrowsburg Ecumenical Food Pantry, which currently serves approximately 70 local families within a 10-mile radius.

All proceeds from Soup for Good will go directly to the pantry’s holiday meal program, helping local families put food on the table for both Thanksgiving and Christmas. The fundraiser is built around a simple idea: when everyone contributes what they can, those individual acts of generosity can become something much bigger.

Local farmers and food producers have graciously donated the ingredients and food that make the event possible, including Willow Wisp Organic Farm, Four Story Hill Farm, Two Creek Farm, Trapani Farms, Roger That Bakery, Soraia’s Kitchen and Cakes & Scones Bakery. The team at Union Works Café is taking those locally donated ingredients and transforming them into hot tomato soup and hearty beef chili for the community to enjoy.

“The money raised through Soup for Good goes directly toward supporting local families in need during the holidays,” said Erin Fairbanks, volunteer with the Narrowsburg Ecumenical Food Pantry. “For many households, this time of year brings added expenses on top of the everyday challenge of putting food on the table. Soup for Good is about more than just a meal; it’s a community-wide effort to ensure that everyone in our neighborhood feels cared for and supported during the holidays.”

Fairbanks added, “Partnering with local businesses like Union Works Café and our local farmers to turn wholesome ingredients into delicious soup is the perfect way to show how we can take care of our own while bringing everyone to the table.”

“This really is an example of what a local food community can look like at its best,” said Danielle Gaebel, Market Manager of the Narrowsburg Farmers’ Market. “Our farmers and food producers work incredibly hard to grow and make food for our community, and they have graciously stepped up to donate to this event. Union Works Café is giving their time and talent, our musicians are showing up, the food pantry is doing the work of getting food into the hands of our neighbors who need it—and then we need the community to come out and complete that circle. It truly takes a village.”

Guests can purchase a cup of soup or chili for $10, or a $15 meal that includes soup or chili, bread, an apple and a cookie. Food can be enjoyed at the market or taken to go.

The morning will also feature live music by Rewind Therapy.

For Gaebel, the event also reflects the larger role a farmers’ market can play in the community it serves. “Farmers’ markets are about more than a transaction between a farmer and a customer,” Gaebel said. “They’re about relationships—knowing who grows your food, knowing your neighbors and recognizing that we all have a role to play in creating a community where people are cared for. Every donated vegetable, loaf of bread, apple, cookie, hour of work and bowl of soup becomes part of something larger.”

Soup for Good takes place Saturday, October 24 beginning at 10 a.m. at the Narrowsburg Farmers’ Market, 7 Erie Avenue in Narrowsburg, behind the Narrowsburg Union.

All proceeds benefit the Narrowsburg Ecumenical Food Pantry’s holiday meal program, supporting local families for Thanksgiving and Christmas.
