FALLSBURG — The transition back to 11-Man has not been easy for the Comets, who finished the regular season without a win. After an impressive 2023 season that culminated in a playoff appearance in 8-Man football, the Comets moved back up to 11-Man due to increased enrollment.

Coach Dom Scanna, who spent the past 11 years as the Head Coach for Fallsburg, gave up the reigns this year but stood in as an assistant to help with the transition.

Friday night marked his final game coaching for Fallsburg, and the team gave their all for him one final time. Unfortunately, the Spartans succeeded in getting their sixth win of the season, defeating the Comets 46-18.

The Comets started with the ball on their own 28, starting off with a double reverse for some positive yards before turning the ball over on downs. Spackenkill needed just two plays for their first score, taking a 6-0 lead with 8:56 to play.

On their next drive, the Comets evened up the score with Senior Quarterback Nick Storms connecting with Senior Wide Receiver Donovan Hart for six.

Spackenkill started at their own 43 after an onside kick attempt before the end of the first quarter.

The Spartans opened the second quarter with a score, making it 13-6 after a successful extra point, before recovering an onside kick. They scored again just a minute later making it 20-6 after another successful PAT.

Fallsburg returned the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown to make it 20-12.

Spackenkill scored again to make it 27-12 before kicking the ball back to Fallsburg. The Comets got close to the end zone but were unable to punch in a score before the half.

The Spartans scored back-to-back touchdowns in the third, using a long offensive drive and a Pick-6 to add 13 to their total and make it 40-12.

Despite the lopsided score, the Comets continued to battle, starting their next drive from their own 6-yard line and driving all the way down for a score to make it 40-18.

The Spartans scored a final time in the waning minutes of the game to take home the 46-18 victory.

“I’ve coached for 31 years,” Coach Scanna said after the game. “The last 11 as the Head Coach for Fallsburg were special. We’ve had great groups of young men and women come up through the program and I’m excited to see what comes next for them. Even though I’m not the coach, I’ll always be a fan.”

“Hats off to Spackenkill tonight,” Coach Lionel White said. “Even though the scoreboard says we lost, it felt like we won today. Coach Scanna has been a mentor of mine for years, and this whole community has big shoes to fill to keep up what he started. He’ll have a long-lasting legacy on this team and in this community.”
