SULLIVAN COUNTY – The end of the spring season is synonymous with the end of school, and for some, graduation and the start of the next chapter.

Beginning the year with the fall sports like football, soccer, cross-country and volleyball gives way to the indoor sports of the winter before student-athletes emerge with the warmer weather.

Baseball across Sullivan County has historically had its share of challenges, with poor field conditions and unfavorable weather giving local athletes a late start to their final season.

Despite the early setbacks of March and April weather, athletes across the county went out this year and competed valiantly.

Liberty and Eldred were the lone Sectional qualifiers this season, with the Yellowjackets losing in the Section IX Class D Championship to the eventual State Champion Chapel Field Lions.

After careful consideration, the Sullivan County Democrat sports team is proud to announce the 2023 Baseball All-Stars.

Josh Warming and Frankie Whitmore from Eldred were two integral members of the Yellowjackets squad, with innings on the mound and quality at-bats helping Eldred get to the Section IX Chip.

Fallsburg’s southpaw pitcher, Mateo Scanna kept hitters off balance all season long, while Yadhier Tejada cleaned up at the plate, leading the team in batting average.

Liberty’s All-Stars include Tanner Bury, Elliel Lima, David Philips, Derek Wheeler and Cody Ricco. This core of players were key contributors in the middle of the year when Liberty kicked off a winning streak that elevated them to playoff contention.

Livingston Manor and Roscoe were back to being a merged squad after each school hosted a team last season. Anthony Zamenick was a pitcher and team leader in many of the stats. Robert Buck and Robert Staudt were also stat leaders for the young team.

Monticello’s Irvin Oestrich and Nathan Borko were key contributors for the Panthers, both offensively and defensively throughout the season.

Sullivan West’s All-Stars include Evan Ebert who led the team with 24 hits, Jacob Hubert with a team leading .644 on base percentage, Alec Hubert who batted .359 and a .600 obp and Jaymes Buddenhagen for his defensive prowess.

The Tri-Valley All-Stars are Austin Hartman who shut teams down on the mound all year. Also Josh Carmody, Colin Monell and Dan Winters. Their contributions kept the Bears in the Sectional conversation up until the final game of the season.
