SUNY Sullivan Basketbal Camp:

Learning skills and drills on the court

LOCH SHELDRAKE – Last week SUNY Sullivan Athletic Department hosted their annual Boys and Girls Basketball Camp. Students from around the county attend the four day camp during the summer to develop fundamental skills of the game, work on drills and build team strategies.

Coach Rick Swillinger is in his first year of running the camp. Swillinger joined as the head coach for the men’s basketball program just last year. He said, “I’m loving it! We’ve got a nice number of kids, both young and old. They’re very enthusiastic and good listeners. There’s some good talent here.”

The camp, which is open to children ages 7-17 attracted a host of students from the area as well as a few students who were in town visiting family. The morning began with an extensive warm-up of running, stretching, and a mixed bag of coordination drills. Tai Plenty, Kaleb Maldonado, and Tyler McCray are all students in the Rockland Central School District [combined Manor/Roscoe] and are all hoping to improve their skills for the upcoming basketball season.

Bo Mueller, a recent graduate of the Tri-Valley School District, volunteered at the camp this year. Mueller will attend SUNY Sullivan this fall and shared how he hopes to make it as a walk-on. “I think my chances are pretty good,” he said.

While attending the camp, students also learned how to better communicate on the court, ball and court awareness, and how to effectively play the sport as a team.
