More than 50 patriots from the Upper Delaware Valley and beyond descended on the Seminary Hill Cidery in Callicoon on Saturday afternoon to celebrate a great part of American history.
‘The British Are Coming,’ an afternoon of history and fun sponsored by the Delaware Company, officially kicked off the commemoration of the 250th Anniversary of the start of the Revolutionary War.
And while no horses were allowed inside, the spirit of Paul Revere was everywhere, from a dramatic reading of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s poem ‘Paul Revere’s Ride,’ to a one-woman play entitled, “Rendevous with Rachel Revere.”
Dressed in period costume, Monticello actor Oliver King read the epic poem to the enthralled audience and then Judith Kalaora of ‘History at Play’ took the stage.
It was as good as it gets for local history buffs as “Mrs. Revere” not only told the story of her husband’s famous ride, but used the audience to fill in many of the parts.
Following the performances, the patriots were treated to a chocolate and vanilla cake – entitled Midnight Ride – which was made by famous cake-maker supreme Kim Simons of Wurtsboro.
The afternoon of history was in support of the Delaware Company, whose mission is to promote and support the history of the Upper Delaware River Valley’s historic landmarks through education, outreach and funding.
The Delaware Company runs Fort Delaware in Narrowsburg among its many activities.
