SMALLWOOD – The Club at Smallwood is hosting two upcoming free events with guest speakers:
Welcoming Birds, Butterflies and Hummingbirds into Your Garden, Sunday, July 26 at 7:30 pm
Garden designer Joan McDonald will discuss how to create a habitat to attract them and the strategy focused on providing them with continuous food sources, water and shelter to keep them in the garden. Joan will also discuss the various plants they desire - a combination of nectar-rich flowers, seed and berry producing plants. She will also talk about the plants and structures that offer protection from predators and the elements. Joan is a Certified Horticulturist trained at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. She also had her own Garden Design, Installation and Maintenance Company in Brooklyn for over 25 years.
Interesting Cases I Have Tried Friday, July 31 at 7:30 pm
NYS Supreme Court Justice Ira Marguilis will speak on how people found not fit for trial are handled under NYS law, including issues with mentally disabled defendants in NYS hospitals. Justice Marguilis is the designated judge in Queens Supreme Court Criminal Term, including handling defendants with pending cases who are found not fit for trial. They go to State psychiatric hospitals where they are treated and eventually found fit. All those defendants are brought before him and he makes the final determination of fitness.
