EQUINUNK, PA – On Sunday, March 8, our club met for our monthly meeting at the Lookout Firehall. Prior to our business meeting, Anna Andersen from Andersen’s Maple Farm in Long Eddy presented an educational Club Level Learning Experience to our club.

She talked about the history of maple syrup and the significant importance of the maple industry in the Northeast and Canada. It is the only region that can produce maple products. Anna utilized props and displays from past 4-H members in the Andersen family, (including Megan who is a Tri-Gal alumni). She led us through the very beginnings of maple syrup making with the Native Americans to the most recent technology making this labor-intensive process a bit more simplified. We watched a video produced by the New York State Maple Producers that summed up the presentation.

After the presentation, our members enjoyed pancakes that were made by member Riley’s mom, Kristin. We topped the pancakes with delicious Andersen’s Maple Syrup and Maple Sugar. Members also got to taste Andersen’s Maple Butter on Ritz crackers, and some sampled the maple butter on top of chocolate chip cookies.

At the conclusion of our March business meeting, members began working on their Club Level Learning Experience project related to the presentation. Curious to know what we did? Come see our display in the Red Metal Building at the Wayne County Fair, August 7-15. Interested in learning more about 4-H in Wayne County?
