CALLICOON – A pop-up group exhibition of visual and sound art will take place in the Callicoon Depot during the sixth edition of the Upstate Art Weekend (UPAW), a connective annual event, for residents and tourists alike, celebrating the cultural vibrancy of Upstate NY. The exhibition will take place Thursday, July 17 through Sunday, July 20 from 12-5pm each day, with an opening reception on Friday, July 18, 4-6pm. The event is free and open to the public.
In the center of the Hamlet of Callicoon sits a waiting room for a passenger train that stopped running 59 years ago. The Callicoon Depot, built in the late 1890’s by the Erie Railroad, becomes the stage for a group of visual and sound artists who mine ecstatic states from places of isolation and longing. The artists included in the exhibition are James Cullinane, Samuelle Green, GH Hovagimyan, William Landau, Paul D. Miller (aka DJ Spooky), Michael Sarff, Philomene Sarff-Shirley, Tanner Simon, and Raphaele Shirley. The exhibition features local artists and all but one, James Cullinane, have a studio with a 30-minute drive of the Depot.
Along with the exhibition, live talks and performances will take place over the weekend.
On Saturday July 19, from 3-4pm – Live Sound: Michael Sarff - Music for Music for Airports; Saturday, July 19, from 4-5pm – Conversation: J. Morgan Puett with Cyra Levenson – On Art and Learning; and Saturday, July 19 from 5-6 pm – Conversation: Tanner Simon. A sound performance by GH Hovagimyan will take place on Sunday, July 20 from 3-4pm.
The exhibition is sponsored by the Callicoon Depot Inc and the Callicoon Business Association.
