LIBERTY — The Town of Liberty Parks and Recreation will celebrate the opening of the Walnut Mountain House History Trail on Saturday, June 6 at 73 Walnut Mountain Road in Liberty. Take a walk back in time while you explore the trail and learn about the Walnut Mountain House's past through the interpretive panels along the trail.
A ribbon-cutting will be held at 10 a.m. followed by two different-paced guided hikes: one a slower pace and a faster one for seasoned hikers.
The trail is a mile roundtrip along the old carriage road that once brought visitors to the summit where the Walnut Mountain House stood. The hotel's foundation can still be seen at the summit, engaging hikers who have wondered what happened to the hotel. You might be surprised to learn about its final days!
A group of six panels were commissioned describing the history of the hotel and its demise. Funding for this project was made possible in part by a Municipal Partnership Grant from Sullivan 180.
Benches along the trail for hikers to pause for a break are contributed by the Interact Club of Liberty Central Schools, under the direction of teacher Alyssa Thalmann.
For information about the trail and to register for either of the hikes, call Lisa at 845-693-4181 or email Lisa@morgan-outdoors.com by Friday, June 5.
