HORTONVILLE

The Sullivan West High School Student Council and Student Council Advisor Catherine Hillriegel got together to participate in this year’s Wreaths Across America. The national event serves to remember and honor our veterans by laying remembrance wreaths on the graves of our country’s fallen heroes.

Sullivan West students took part by singing the National Anthem, playing taps, and singing God Bless America at the Hortonville Fire Department on Saturday afternoon, with remarks by Student Council member Ethan Clark and Sullivan County Commissioner of Health and Human Services John Liddle.

“Thank you to these students and our staff for highlighting community service in our communities,” stated David Eggleton, Sullivan West Central School District Secondary School Principal.

Following the ceremony, the students placed wreaths at the Holy Cross Cemeteries in Callicoon.

LONG EDDY

On a snow-covered ground at the St. Patrick’s Cemetery, 108 veterans were remembered for their service to the United States.

As part of Wreaths Across America, 20-plus volunteers and a few members of the Small Town Country 4-H honored those veterans by laying wreaths on their graves.

ROSCOE

A community came together to participate in Wreaths Across America in Roscoe. Cub Scout Pack 105 and Girl Scout Troop 693 posted the colors, led the Pledge of Allegiance and helped place the wreaths at the Westfield Flats Cemetery.

The presentation of the Ceremonial Wreaths were hung by: US Army - Terry France; US Marine Corps - Bruce Tucker; US Navy - Robert Rose; US Air Force - Dick Smith; US Space Force - William Diggs; US Merchant Marine - Jackie France in memory of her father Paul DeVantier; POW/MIA - Greg Lavorgna. Wreaths were also hung for the NYS Police, Roscoe-Rockland Fire Dept. and the Roscoe-Rockland Ambulance Corps.

Russell Reeves, Sullivan County Clerk, delivered the keynote address. Bill Hendrickson sang the National Anthem and “God Bless America”. Names of the veterans for Westfield Flats Cemetery were read by Judie Smith; names for Riverview Cemetery were read by Valorie Rittendale, location coordinator; names for Beaverkill Cemetery were read by Karrie Jara.

There were 67 wreath sponsors; 11 business sponsors and six community organizations sponsoring wreaths. The Roscoe-Rockland Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary provided a reception after the ceremony at the Community Center.
