WHITE LAKE- This past weekend, following some last-minute schedule changes, Brett Deyo made his return to Bethel Motor Speedway, where his racing career started when he was a 16-year-old PR writer and his father raced on the ¼-mile asphalt surface. With only a few weeks’ notice of the date change to accommodate Eastern State practice at Orange County (NY) Fairgrounds Speedway and “Halloween Havoc” at Accord (NY) Speedway, Deyo put on a great show that moved along well and took full advantage of warm, sunny weather.
The day began with hot laps, which were followed with one heat race for each of the day’s features. Corey Lowitt, winner of the last Sportsman feature at Bethel two weeks ago, won the heat race in convincing fashion. After the redraw, however, Lowitt found himself starting fourth, alongside second-place heat finisher Jamie Yannone.
The first few laps of the 50-lap spectacular saw several of the fan favorites picked off, as Justin Holland retired with mechanical issues and Lowitt was also forced into the pits. Yannone was caught up in an early race caution and found himself restarting at the rear of the field.
Jerry Curry, in only his second race of the season, made his way up to the lead and found himself in an intense battle for the top spot as the race continued on. As the laps wound down, however, Curry found himself involved after Joe Buchanan had brought out the caution. Curry retired, while Buchanan was able to rejoin the race. By now, Yannone was back up front, and he collected the win over Mark Pullen and Buchanan.
The Street Stocks took to the track next, with Bethel Renegades champion Kyle Welsch on the pole and Glenn Cargain on the outside of him. While Cargain had proven himself to be unbeatable in the heat race, the same could not be said for the feature, as Welsch got the early lead and held on for the eventual win, followed by Cargain and J.W. Gannon.
Tisha Curry started third in the 4-Cylinder race, and led early before surrendering the lead, but she remained in the hunt for the entire race distance. With only two laps to go, Curry put herself in position to strike. In turn four on the final lap, she shot back into the lead, and was the first to the checkered flag, picking up the win. Curry was followed by teammate Richard Smith and Chris Hardenburgh.
Bethel’s 2024 season has now concluded, while Deyo’s Short Track Super Series Modified North Region Championship Round takes place this Thursday, October 24, during Eastern States weekend. Visit https://www.shorttracksuperseries.com for full details.
