ROSCOE — After a non-league contest earlier in the season, the Livingston Manor-Roscoe Wildcats faced off against the Eldred Yellowjackets for their first divisional head-to-head matchup. Eldred took the first non-league match with a decisive victory, but Thursday’s matchup saw a much closer contest with the Yellowjackets hanging on for a 48-42 victory.

The first quarter was a back-and-forth battle with eight lead changes in the first eight minutes. Ben Johnston, who scored a game-high 20 points, had six in the quarter as the Wildcats escaped the first frame with a 15-10 lead behind an 8-2 run to end the quarter.

Eldred punched back in the second quarter, going on a run of their own to take the lead with a 13-0 run to end the second quarter. James Deyermond, who finished with a team-high 18 points, netted six in the second quarter.

It was Manor’s turn to go on a run after the break, starting the third quarter on a 7-0 run and taking a 30-28 lead, but Eldred settled in and finished off on a 7-4 run to hold onto a 35-34 lead after three quarters.

Manor took the lead back early in the fourth, but Eldred continued to work the ball inside, scoring a few late transition buckets in the process to stave off the Wildcats and bring home a 48-42 win.

For Eldred, it was their fourth division victory. They have yet to lose to Chapel Field, Tuxedo or Livingston Manor-Roscoe this season.

The Wildcats, on the other hand, are sitting at 1-1 in the division with four more league games remaining.

“What a game!” Eldred Coach Bill Furler said after the win. “I love playing against this team. Coach Hicks does a great job and they are always a tough matchup, but we’re a tough team to beat. I have to give a huge shoutout to my guys for hanging in tonight and staying tough. We have a great defense and we have to stick to what makes us: getting the ball down low.”

“It was a phenomenal game to be a part of,” Livingston Manor Coach Charlie Hicks said. “A lot of really talented individuals showing their skills.

It seems like Eldred is the team to beat in Class D this year, and we’re hoping to play them two more times.”
