LIBERTY – From the opening tip, Tuesday night’s matchup between Eldred and Liberty was heated. For a regular-season game between two teams not traditionally considered rivals, it quickly felt like a sectional championship—physical, intense, and emotionally charged from start to finish.
In front of an amped home crowd and an equally enthusiastic Yellowjackets visitors section, the Liberty Redhawks entered with confidence after a 12-point victory over Eldred a week earlier on their home floor. This time, however, the pendulum swung the other way.
Eldred’s Trai Kauffman led all scorers with 29 points, doing most of his damage in the second half once he caught fire. The 6-foot-3 guard’s lithe frame slipped through defenders, leading to eight field goals and a three-pointer. His relentless drives to the basket drew constant contact, resulting in 10 points from the free-throw line. When Eldred needed a bucket, Kaufmann delivered.
He had help. Koen McGill added 17 points, while James Deyermond used his size, soft hands, and footwork in the paint to finish with 11.
The physical nature of the game showed up on the stat sheet. Liberty was called for 22 fouls compared to Eldred’s six, a disparity that played a significant role in the outcome. The Yellowjackets scored 29 of their 62 points from the free-throw line. Eldred led 17–14 after the first quarter and carried a 33–25 advantage into halftime.
Still, Liberty refused to go away.
The Redhawks went nearly shot-for-shot with Eldred through three quarters in a back-and-forth battle defined by tough defense, blocked shots, and aggressive play on both ends. Some fouls were called, others weren’t, setting up a nail-biting fourth quarter with Eldred clinging to a 43–42 lead at the end of the third.
Liberty placed three players in double figures. Tyleal Aubain scored 15 points, Zack Alvord added 14 while knocking down four three-pointers, and Adrien Ferguson finished with 12. Cameron Lawson chipped in seven points, highlighted by a pair of impressive cross-court drives to the basket.
After the loss, Liberty Head Coach Robinson addressed both the performance and the circumstances.
“Eldred is a solid squad. We didn’t play well offensively, and when you have two ‘bigs foul out, they shoot 21 free throws, and we shoot two all night, that’s a lopsided game,” Robinson said. “We can’t use it as an excuse—it’s part of the game—but it’s frustrating.”
Speaking to his team afterward, Robinson emphasized resilience, pointing out that Liberty had won five straight games prior to the loss and must respond with determination and focus moving forward.
Eldred Head Coach Furler praised his team’s adjustments after last week’s defeat.
“It was a heated game—a good one. They beat us by 12 last week, and we knew we had to change some things defensively,” Furler said. “Once they put the big guy in, we went man-to-man. At 6-foot-9, he’s a presence.”
Furler also highlighted improved perimeter defense as a key difference.
“Last game they hit 10 threes—that’s 30 points. We had to take those away. The way our guys played in the second half, especially in this hostile environment, was amazing.
On this night, though, the Yellowjackets had just enough toughness, execution, and urgency to earn a hard-fought win that felt like much more than just another regular-season game.
