ELDRED — Last Friday, a brisk, cold evening set the stage for playoff football under the lights on Eldred's new turf field, where the Yellowjackets welcomed the Tri-Valley Bears for the opening round of sectional play. With both sidelines fired up and the stands filled with fans cheering their teams on, Eldred struck early and held off a determined second-half comeback to secure a 14-6 victory and advance to the next round.
The Yellowjackets wasted little time making their presence felt. On their opening possession, they connected on a deep pass that brought the offense within striking distance of the end zone. A powerful rushing play finished the drive, and a successful two-point conversion gave the home team an immediate 8-0 advantage.
Eldred's defense followed suit, shutting down Tri-Valley's early offensive attempts and keeping the Bears from establishing much momentum. Tri-Valley began threatening to answer as the quarter neared the five-minute mark, threatening to, advancing deep into Eldred territory before attempting a pass into the end zone. The throw fell incomplete, and the Yellowjackets took possession.
An immediate quarterback keeper pushed Eldred out to midfield, sending the home crowd into a frenzy as fans from both schools traded chants across the field.
Two incomplete passes appeared to stall Eldred's momentum, but a perfectly placed 40-yard pass kept the drive alive and put Eldred right back in scoring position.
On the following play, Liam McGill delivered a trick-play pass to Jacob Tice, who managed to make the touchdown catch despite being surrounded by the Bears’ defense. The celebration was short-lived, however, as a penalty erased the score and pushed Eldred back to the 20-yard line.
Undeterred, the Yellowjackets returned to the ground game, steadily grinding their way toward the goal line until they found themselves just two yards away as the first quarter ended.
Eldred picked up exactly where it left off to open the second quarter. On the very first play, Tice struck again, taking an outside sweep into the end zone, making up for his earlier touchdown being called back and extending the Yellowjackets' lead to 14-0. The ensuing two-point conversion attempt was unsuccessful.
The Yellowjackets continued applying pressure on the kickoff, swarming Tri-Valley's returner and bringing him down at the 14-yard line.
But the Bears weren't ready to roll over.
Tri-Valley began methodically working their way downfield, picking up small gains and fighting for every yard against Eldred's defense. The drive eventually stalled near midfield, where the Yellowjackets came up with a crucial fourth-down stop to regain possession.
Eldred immediately looked to strike through the air again, launching a deep pass that fell incomplete near the end zone. Although the play didn't result in points, it highlighted the difference between the two offenses during the first half. Tri-Valley was battling for short gains on the ground, while Eldred's passing attack seemed capable of putting the Yellowjackets in scoring position with a single completion.
For much of the half, it appeared Eldred was beginning to run away with the contest. However, Tri-Valley found another opportunity late in the second quarter.
After marching toward midfield, the Bears faced another critical fourth down. This time, Andrew Kelly connected with Matthew Ortiz Jimenez on a short screen pass, and Jimenez turned on the speed, breaking free for a 30-yard gain that brought Tri-Valley to Eldred's 25-yard line.
With just 52 seconds remaining before halftime, the Bears had an opportunity to cut into the deficit and enter the locker room with some much-needed momentum.
Instead, disaster struck when Tri-Valley attempted a pass into the end zone, and Eldred came away with an interception. With only 30 seconds remaining, the turnover effectively ended the half, sending the Yellowjackets into the break holding a commanding 14-0 lead.
The third quarter brought a noticeable shift in momentum.
Eldred's defense opened the second half with several impressive stops, eventually forcing Tri-Valley into a fourth-and-five situation. The Bears managed to connect on a short pass for the first down, to keep their drive alive and give themselves another chance to reach the end zone.
Tri-Valley pushed into scoring range, but a series of incomplete passes brought the promising possession to an abrupt end.
The Bears' defense then delivered one of its biggest plays of the night, breaking through Eldred's offensive line for a massive sack that pushed the Yellowjackets dangerously close to surrendering a safety.
Eldred managed to punt the ball away, but Tri-Valley quickly marched back downfield. Once again, the Yellowjackets' defense rose to the occasion, stopping the Bears around the 20-yard line and preserving the shutout.
By this point, Eldred's explosive first-half offense had largely disappeared. The Yellowjackets were struggling to gain ground, and Tri-Valley's defense was beginning to take control of the line of scrimmage.
That pressure finally paid off when the Bears punched through and forced an Eldred fumble, recovering the football near the Yellowjackets' 30-yard line.
A quarterback keeper moved Tri-Valley into the red zone just as the third quarter expired, setting up a dramatic final period with Eldred still leading 14-0.
The Bears finally broke through early in the fourth quarter.
After fighting their way toward the goal line, Tri-Valley connected on a touchdown pass to put its first points on the scoreboard. The two-point conversion attempt failed, but with approximately nine minutes remaining, the Bears had cut the deficit to 14-6 and suddenly found themselves within one possession of tying the game.
The atmosphere grew increasingly tense as both teams traded possessions without managing to establish a sustained offensive attack.
Then, with time beginning to run short, Tri-Valley threw another costly interception near the 30-yard line, giving Eldred an excellent opportunity to put the game out of reach.
The Yellowjackets took advantage of the field position, breaking off an outside run that moved the ball to the nine-yard line. A Tri-Valley facemask penalty then gave Eldred a fresh set of downs and a first-and-goal opportunity.
With the Bears' season hanging in the balance, their defense delivered one final stand.
Tri-Valley forced a fumble and recovered the football, denying Eldred a chance to extend its lead and giving the Bears possession with approximately a minute and a half remaining.
Trailing by eight, Tri-Valley still had a path to overtime, but the clock was quickly becoming its biggest enemy.
The Bears began marching downfield, desperately searching for the big play that could keep their postseason hopes alive. But with just 37 seconds remaining, they had only reached midfield.
Tri-Valley continued battling until the final seconds, but Eldred's defense refused to surrender the tying touchdown.
When the clock finally expired, the Yellowjackets emerged with a hard-earned 14-6 victory, surviving a relentless second-half push from the Bears.
The game proved to be a tale of two halves. Eldred's explosive passing attack and early rushing success established a two-touchdown advantage before halftime, while its defense repeatedly came through with crucial stops and interceptions when Tri-Valley threatened to score.
The Bears, meanwhile, demonstrated resilience throughout the contest, particularly in the second half, when their defensive pressure and timely turnovers kept them within striking distance until the final moments.
Ultimately, Eldred's early offensive success and ability to protect its lead made the difference. After Eldred’s win, Head Coach Sean McAveney shared his thoughts on the tough competition. “It was a very hard-fought, physical football game that came down to the final play for the second week in a row. Tri Valley is a good team. They are strong and physical. I am proud of our defense. They played well, for the most part, and made enough plays for us to win.”
With the opening-round sectional victory secured, the Yellowjackets will advance to face #2 Sullivan West on Friday, November 6, carrying the momentum of a playoff win on their new home turf into the next round of postseason competition. The Bulldogs received a BYE and will host the Yellowjackets on their home field. The Yellowjackets came out on top to secure the title. The Bulldogs have been strong and consistent all season and are looking to claim the 2026 title.
