2025 Seed Catalogs

Posted

The holidays are over, 2025 has begun and spring is less than three months away. You have probably already received seed catalogs in the mail as the 2025 seeds are out. These days you’ll probably also receive flower bulbs as well as fruit tree and berry bush catalogs.

The weather outside is anything but spring like, but you can start planning for the growing season ahead. Our seeds are out and buying trends have definitely changed over the last few decades. Flowers used to be the majority of seed sales back in the last century, the 80’s and 90’s, but now it is all about the vegetables. A couple reasons for this is that the amount of flower varieties available as starter plants in the spring has greatly increased over the past forty years. It used to be pansies, petunias, impatiens and marigolds that dominated the starter plant market but now there are over five hundred varieties that are available in spring so you don’t need to grow your own.

Even though there are more vegetable plant varieties available in spring as well, here are a few factors as to why many people want to grow their own vegetables from seed. The popularity of heirloom and non-GMO varieties lead the way but there are other factors as well. Most people want to plant their gardens in the second half of May and because wholesale growers know this they try to make sure we at retail have the best selection of plants available to us around May tenth. However, we only have so much room in our greenhouses for all these plants and will likely sell out of the most popular varieties.

You might think, why not just order more of the popular varieties? Because each year the popular varieties change due to what people read online, in social media posts and magazines. Ten years ago, one article was written about the health benefits of elderberries and that spring we sold four times the amount of elderberries compared to any previous year, and we could have sold more but our suppliers ran out as well.

So even though we have a great variety of vegetable starter plants in the spring, if you grow it yourself you can make sure you have the plants you want, right when you want to plant them. This is the main reason we have so many varieties of vegetable seeds now and they make up the majority of our seed displays. We do run out of seeds as well from time to time, which is the reason why you need to plan ahead especially when it comes to the varieties that need to be planted early because they have longer germination times, like tomatoes and peppers.

Some varieties of tomatoes and peppers you may want to start as early as mid-February, so getting the seed now so you know you have it is a good thing. Seeds like cucumbers and zucchini you can wait till early May if you want as these seeds will sprout in less than a week from the time of planting. Now is the time to decide what and when you will start planting seeds indoors, besides what else can you do now, the ground is either covered by snow or it melts and creates mud everywhere. Either way, spring is getting closer every day and the days are getting longer. So peruse those seed catalogs and come in and check out the seed varieties we have in stock right now, we may be able to save you some shipping and handling charges.
