Liberty board discusses hiring

LIBERTY – The Liberty Town Board addressed several municipal matters during its September 21st meeting, including highway department hiring, infrastructure projects, and proposed zoning changes.

One of the evening’s lengthier discussions concerned the proposed hiring of Marco Torres and Kevin Alvarado for the Highway Department. The hiring prompted a discussion over whether the Highway Department had followed the town’s established hiring procedures before being brought to the town board’s agenda.

Although it was discussed that they would consider approving the appointments pending pre-appointment testing, the motion was ultimately tabled until the next meeting to allow time to verify that the required procedures had been followed.

It was emphasized by Supervisor Frank DeMayo that “future hires will not be considered on the agenda until all procedures have been met” to prevent the delay again in the future.

A proposed zoning adjustment involving two adjoining properties along Route 52 and Schoolhouse Road also prompted discussion. The property owners are seeking to reconfigure their lots while maintaining commercial zoning along Route 52.

Although several board members expressed support, councilmember Vincent McPhillips expressed concern over the matter not being part of the agenda as well as councilmember Bruce Davidson not being present to discuss his opinion on the zoning change. Therefore, the matter was postponed until the full board could review it at a future meeting.

The meeting concluded with the board postponing consideration of engineering services for the Swan Lake Wastewater Treatment Plant comminutor replacement while awaiting further information.
