A gender reveal party

Posted

I consider myself pretty much with it socially, but I have to admit I had never even heard of a gender reveal party, never mind taking part in one in my own family. But last Sunday, my grandson John and his wife Christine and her two boys arrived at my daughter’s house as planned.

They had driven from their home in Toms River. They are having a baby in mid October, and they themselves did not even know the gender of the baby.

That took some careful planning by Christine. She had contacted her doctor to tell him two friends of hers that she works with would be contacting him to find out whether she was carrying a boy or a girl. When the gender was revealed to them, they would be calling a bakery where John had an order placed for cupcakes.

If the baby was a girl, they were to add pink frosting in the middle of each cupcake and if it was a boy, blue frosting would be added.

All the males in the family wanted a boy and we women wanted a girl. We all opened our cupcakes at the same time and found a lot of blue icing. Actually we were thrilled that the two boys and the men got their wishes. The baby will be named Scotty, which pleased my ex-son-in-law, Scott. I have a feeling that when that baby reaches a certain age, he will be asking us all to call him Scott.

Shortly before two we left my daughter’s house to meet Shauna at my house. She was being dropped off at two by her mother. John had to pick up sandwiches he had ordered for our lunch. As I stood up to leave, Kyle offered his hand to me. I thought he wanted to shake it but he was helping me up. That touched me so much as he’s only nine years old. His brother, Dennis is 11. No wonder John brags about those two boys so much.

Later at my house, Shauna was in charge of entertainment. She sang a few songs from Les Mis which she loves to do. We could see that Kyle wanted to sing  Believer by Imagine Dragons but he was getting cold feet so his brother, Dennis, told him he would stand with him and help him out if he got stuck, he would help him.

Dennis is only 11 so that was very mature of him. Kyle didn’t need any help but at the end, Dennis put his arm around him. I told those two boys to call me Nana June  and when the new baby starts to talk he will do the same.

Christine said she used to sing a song from Les Mis when she was in school but she couldn’t think of what it was.  Then it was Shauna’s turn to shine.  She asked her if it was “On My Own” and it was. Christine said her voice was no longer good so Shauna sang it for her.

John kept asking me to sing “I’m My Own Grandpa.” That song is very tricky so I wasn’t sure I could remember all the words but I decided I’d give it a try. Everyone was surprised when I sang all the verses but no one was more surprised than me.

Christine promised to bring Scotty to meet us shortly after he is born, I will then be a Great Grandma. Isn’t that great?
