A necessary pick-up

Posted

In March of 2023, Sullivan County’s government parted ways with their last to hold the title of Human Rights Commissioner, Adrienne Jensen, whose absence left a hole in the important functions in our local government. But now someone has finally been named to step up to the plate with a similar job, but a new title.

Now sitting as the county’s first full-time Human Rights Executive Director, Ramone Wilson was praised by Sullivan County Manager Joshua Potosek as having the experience and the drive to complete the duties of the position moving forward. These traits, along with the other positive attributions noted by the County Manager, are good omens for the future of Sullivan County and its diverse population.

Additionally, the Human Rights Commison board members were named shortly after as Joel Santiago, Ari Mir-Pontier, District 8 Legislator Amanda Ward, Charles Wade, Margaret Gans, Bill Liblick, Ricardo Nieves, Miranda Behan and Alex Portugal. These filled positions are a good step back in the right direction, and are a necessary pick-up for doubling down the county’s commitment to ensuring human rights are observed and practiced at the county level.

Looking back two years ago, the former Human Rights Commissioner stated previously that her stepping down was due to the county not lending the necessary support to address the county’s needs. We hope that this time around, there is proper support given to the executive director and commission. With County Manager Potosek’s blessing, we put our trust that the county leadership will place an emphasis on Ramone’s position, and fund the commission’s mission as it deserves to be.

As a transplant from Newark, New Jersey, and later Orange County, we want to welcome Wilson to Sullivan County and wish him the best of luck as he endeavors to ensure through his new position that all human beings, no matter the race, creed, financial status or situation, are treated with dignity, grace and are offered the support so sorely needed, and every other duty that comes with the lofty office.
