A neighborly Fourth

It is difficult not to feel as if our nation is facing tumultuous times right now. The past few elections and current political climate have made Americans more divided than ever. As we view each other as either “red” or “blue” tensions and hate can begin to grow.

While we can’t ignore what’s going on around us, we urge you to find it in yourself to look past these lines–and see your neighbor.

The Fourth of July is a day to celebrate the birth of the United States as an independent country, now 249 years ago. It’s also a time to come together and be with your friends, family and your community.

There are many events happening throughout Sullivan County and beyond, from fireworks to street fairs, from parades to parties.

Look through the pages of this issue to find an event near you and get out there. In order to come across divides we must talk to one another. You may find that you have much more in common than you would think.

From newcomers to locals who have lived here for generations, many want the same things: safety for ourselves and our families, a thriving community, healthy children and more.

The Fourth of July is also a time to honor our freedom, and we would be remiss not to acknowledge the freedom of the press, as is enshrined in our constitution.

Thomas Jefferson, while at times critical of the press, also wrote and spoke about its great importance.

“Our liberty depends on the freedom of the press, and that cannot be limited without being lost,” he said.

Or as Walter Cronkite said, “Freedom of the press is not just important to democracy, it is democracy.”

Let’s celebrate these freedoms and our community–together.
