A new era begins

Posted

It is a welcome sight to see SUNY Sullivan select their new President, Dr. David Potash, especially with a healthy amount of time between what was the tenure of the last formal president and today. Now, the college places its trust in the 8th President of the college since its creation in the 1960s.

That trust will spearhead the college into a new era, complete with a fresh set of eyes overseeing the operation. With Potash’s detailed history in education, we place our own trust in the selection and are excited to see what lies ahead for the two-year college. As we move our vision to the future, we also must take a quick look behind us to acknowledge who held the line.

Officer In Charge, Dr. Casey Crabill, deserves a round of applause for her eight months of supervision while the search for a full-time president was underway. There were no better hands to uphold the college in that time than hers, and thanks to the unshaken hands and steady heart of the interim leadership, something new is blooming. Additionally, thank you to all those involved with the Presidential search – your interest and insight to who would be the best candidate to lead our students is what keeps institutions like SUNY Sullivan at the top of its game.

But of course, in every new era, there come new issues, problems and obstacles to overcome – this one is no different. Even now, there are talks of unprecedented courses of action like the possibility of providing temporary housing to stave off local homelessness. The new President will likely be faced with difficult decisions and an ever-changing landscape of higher education, but SUNY Sullivan’s history has proven that the college can rise to any and every occasion, and we trust that the tradition will continue.

We hope President Potash bodes well in his new position as leader of the college, and that the experience of the Board of Trustees and former leaders of the college offers guidance that displays their knowledge and dedication to the education and well-being of so many in our community.
