Actor Mark Ruffalo accepts Emmy Award live from Callicoon

Actor Mark Ruffalo accepted his Emmy win for outstanding lead actor in a limited series or a movie for his role in “I Know This Much is True” from a location very familiar to all of us here in Sullivan County—Callicoon.

“I'm coming to you from ancestral land of the Lenape and Munsee native people in upstate New York,” Ruffalo said in his acceptance speech with his wife Sunrise (Sunny) Coignet by his side.

Based on the novel of the same name, the HBO miniseries follows Dominick Birdsey as he struggles to care for his twin brother, Thomas, who lives with paranoid schizophrenia. It was co-written and directed by Derek Cianfrance.

Ruffalo portrayed both twins, undergoing severe physical changes to play both roles.

In an impassioned speech, Ruffalo urged viewers to vote for “love and compassion.”

“We have to come together with love for each other, and if we have privilege we have to fight for those who are less fortunate and more vulnerable,” Ruffalo said. “And that's what's great about America: our diversity.”

Ruffalo is well known as a part-time Callicoon resident. His wife owns Sunny's Pop in Narrowsburg (formerly located in Callicoon).

This was his second Emmy win and third nomination.
