Anticipated firefighter incentive sees joint public hearing

FORESTBURGH  — A joint public hearing between the Town Board of Forestburgh and the Fire Department was held Thursday night. It focused on Local Law #1 of 2024, a property tax  to generate incentive for people to volunteer for the Forestburgh fire service.

According to Former Forestburgh Fire Department Chief Jim Steinberg Sr., the law will take effect following the department’s regular meeting later this month.

As a result of the local law, real property owned by an enrolled member of an incorporated volunteer fire company, fire department, or incorporated volunteer ambulance service, or by such enrolled member and their spouse, shall be exempt for ten (10) percent of the assessed value of their property for calculation of real property taxes for the Town of Forestburgh, exclusive of special assessments.

According to the local law, the Town Board determined that attracting and retaining quality volunteer firefighters and ambulance workers is a key component in providing for the safety and welfare of Town residents, but also presents a significant challenge throughout the Town and neighboring Towns.

The local law goes on to say that the Town Board has also determined that real property tax exemptions are an appropriate way to recognize the sacrifice and dedication of volunteer firefighters and ambulance workers.

More on the local law can be found on the town’s website, www.forestburgh.net.
