For many farmers, gardeners, and home-growers it’s planting season in Sullivan County. Now is the time to sow seeds and hope for rewards in the months to come.

As grocery store prices continue to climb growing your own food is an economical project, not to mention healthier. It may take a lot of hard work, especially if you’re just starting out, but it’s worth it.

There are a few upcoming programs offered by organizations in our community to help the novice gardener.

The Delaware Highlands Conservancy will host a Growing Your Own Food educational workshop series led by local farmer Amy Erlwein, scheduled for spring 2026 at the Van Scott Nature Reserve in Beach Lake, PA.

For gardeners just getting started or those with more experience, the workshop series will cover every step of the process, from planting and caring for seedlings to harvesting and preserving food.

“From Seed to Sprout (Part 1)” will be held on April 25, 10 a.m.-12 p.m., and part 2 is on May 30 and part 3 on September 19.

And on Saturday, May 9 Farm Arts Collective and SEEDS present a backyard composting workshop from 9 to 10 a.m. at the Farm Arts headquarters on Willow Wisp Organic Farm in Damascus, PA. Led by environmental educator Chelsea Kelley, this interactive workshop will dive into the science behind composting, offering practical tips for improving soil and plant health while reducing household waste.

For those who don’t have their own gardens, the farmers’ markets in the area will soon be full of abundant greens and colorful fruits and veggies. Find more information though Cornell Cooperative Extension Sullivan County.
