Are you aware of unclaimed funds through the New York State Comptroller’s Office?

The New York State Comptroller’s office is overseeing $15 billion dollars’ worth of unclaimed funds. Banks, insurance companies, and other institutions are required to turn over the contents of inactive or abandoned accounts.  More than 39 million accounts for New Yorkers have money waiting to be claimed.

In 2022, $48 million dollars’ worth of unused gift card balances were turned over to the Comptroller’s Office of Unclaimed Funds. In total, DiNapoli’s office is currently holding more than $17.5 billion in unclaimed funds. He urges New Yorkers to visit https://ouf.osc.state.ny.us/ouf to see if they are owed money and recommends that they register any gift cards they may have received with the retailer.

The Comptroller’s Office has an online database to check to see if you are owed money as low as $20, dating back to 1985. This searchable database will show whether you are owed as little as $3 since 1985.

To file a claim for one of these accounts, visit the comptroller’s website. A person can also make a claim through the mail: The New York State Comptroller’s Office of Unclaimed Funds, 110 State Street, Albany, NY 12236.

Due to privacy concerns, the dollar amounts associated with each account are not included. A search will return the first 100 records found. Narrow your search with additional terms to improve your results.

For Sullivan County there are 32,087 accounts listed with a total value of unclaimed funds of $16,477,054. Wouldn’t it be nice if this money was brought back into the county for the account holders to spend, rather than New York State being able to keep these funds? Check out the Comptroller’s website to see if your name is listed and claim your funds.
