CANANDAIGUA – Six Sullivan County Skiers traveled to Bristol Mountain Ski Resort earlier this week to compete against the best student athletes in the state at the 2023 NYSPHSAA Alpine Skiing State Championships.
Alexis Heins and Harly Taylor represented Monticello for the girls, while Austin Hartman (TV), Reese Kelly (Monti), Colin Pavese (Fallsburg) and Sam Rein (Monti) were the boys that competed.
All six of the athletes worked hard all winter long, despite the unusually warm start to the season, to earn their trip to the state championship after stellar performances at the Section IX meet.
Competing for State Supremacy
Alexis Heins secured the top spot in the state for her Slalom performance. Her run times of 47.78 and 49.19 combined for a first place finish of 1:36.97. Her teammate Harly Taylor finished 52 with run times of 1:10.57 and 1:05.64 for a combined score of 2:16.11.
In the Great Slalom race, Heins finished in 4th place with a combined time of 2:22.56. Taylor finished 37th with a 2:47.53 result.
The boys Slalom was a tough race for the Sullivan County competitors. Austin Hartman finished 20th with a time of 1:41.78, and the other three skiers either did not finish or were disqualified.
In the Great Slalom, however, three county athletes finished in the top 40. Hartman’s 15th place finish led the way with a time of 2:24.12 and was followed by 36. Colin Pavese (2:35.03) and 38. Sam Rein (2:35.34). Monticello’s Reese Kelly was disqualified during the run.
Hartman won the Section IX Sportsmanship Award for the second consecutive year after winning the Boys Section 9 Championship last weekend.
Heins, who was also a Section 9 Champion, now has a state championship to bring home to Monticello as well.
