Braving cold for the cause

WHITE LAKE — Hosted by the White Lake Fire Department, this year’s “Sue Bunce Memorial Sullivan Freeze For A Cure” was an-unmitigated success as just over 100 folks attended the event. Despite the balmy 30 degree weather, many folks showed up to either jump in the ice cold waters of White Lake, drop off a cash pledge for the cause, or both.

Between 25-30 people took the plunge, while the folks of the White Lake Fire Department ensured that all participants were safe and sound. Also taking the plunge were members of the fire departments of Smallwood, Kauneonga Lake, Grahamsville, Bloomingburg, Lumberland and Woodbourne.

Terry Grafmuller, event organzier, noted that the plunge generated close to $5,000 to go assist in the cause.

Participant, Michael Richardson, explained the experience as such; “first time I went in… it takes my breath away, I mean just went right up into my chest but the second time it’s not too bad, it’s not so bad because you know you’re already wet and you feel acclimated, on the third time I got it… it all depends on how long I stay out of the water.”

Mr. Richardson then explained that the reason he even did the plunge was for Raneta Zegeler.

“She died of Alzheimer’s out West and my friend Lisa’s family as she has Alzheimer’s too and is in an Assisted Living Facility, and then a friend Upstate whose aunt, Ruby Randall, she’s in the middle of it [the disease] and that’s why I jumped three times today.”
