FALLSBURG – Wednesday evening inside a dimly lit gymnasium, with a lively home crowd and a packed visitors section, the Fallsburg Comets struggled to find their rhythm. The Bulldogs wasted no time taking control, using relentless pressure and efficient scoring to coast to a convincing 50–28 victory.
Ella Herbert led all scorers with a dominant 27-point performance, continuing the impressive form she’s shown all season. Herbert connected on seven field goals, knocked down two shots from beyond the arc, and went 7-for-14 from the free-throw line, consistently putting pressure on the Comets’ defense.
Meghan Kelly provided strong support, finishing with 13 points and a three-pointer to help the Bulldogs maintain control throughout the night.
Fallsburg showed early signs that the contest could be competitive, keeping the score close in the opening minutes. However, missed opportunities around the rim and the Bulldogs’ smothering half-court defense quickly shifted momentum. Turnovers turned into easy baskets, and the Comets were unable to recover.
Despite the lopsided final score, Fallsburg had a few bright spots. Joslyn Smith led the Comets with 11 points, including a three-pointer. Senior Marilyn Santos made her presence felt in the paint, using her size to block shots, pull down rebounds, and chip in eight points—most coming off put-backs and second-chance opportunities.
After the game, Fallsburg head coach Ballard reflected on what went wrong.
“We started off great—it was very competitive, going back and forth. It was the half-court trap that got us. I prepared for that during the week,” Ballard said. “Tonight, they were the better team. They played harder, faster, and stronger. A few of our girls catch and don’t dribble, and we get stuck with the ball. They don’t want to go left, which leaves half the court open that we’re not taking advantage of. We have to do better with that.”
Asked about his message to the team following the loss, Ballard emphasized perspective and progress.
“I told them to keep their heads up and be proud of themselves. They only scored 14 points against them last game.”
In a rebuilding season, the Comets continue to search for consistency while identifying areas for growth. They’ll look to clean up turnovers and finish stronger around the basket as they prepare for their next matchup against Port Jervis.
