Burke beats Bears in ‘B’ division battle

GRAHAMSVILLE — The Tri-Valley Bears hosted the Burke Catholic Eagles on Tuesday night in an exciting clash between two Class B opponents. Tri-Valley made the move up to Class B after this year’s reclassification, and it is sure to bring new challenges as the Bears traverse this uncharted territory.

After finishing 1-1 in the Rumble in the Valley tournament in Ellenville, and a day off of school Monday, the Bears were right back in action on Tuesday night, and Burke took full advantage, winning 63-27 over Tri-Valley in the Bears’ toughest matchup so far.

Both teams started well, utilizing quick passes and fast, physical play. Tri-Valley netted the opening bucket and forced three consecutive shot clock violation turnovers to start the game. However, Burke found their stride towards the end of the first quarter, scoring on multiple fastbreak layups to take a 16-9 lead.

Burke kept their foot on the gas throughout the second quarter, grabbing offensive rebounds and getting second-chance points. Despite the passing chemistry between Misha Khodakovski and Matt Fanslau leading to points, Burke was able to pull farther away and led 37-17 by halftime.

In the third quarter, Burke continued to dominate on the boards, and were able to extend their lead to 24 by the end of third, leading 49-25 going into the final frame.

The Eagles held the Bears to just two points throughout the fourth quarter, and contined to build upon their lead as they sped to a 63-27 victory.

“This was a tough game against a tough opponent,” Tri-Valley Coach Kevin Delaney said after the game. “It was our third game in a row without practice due to snow days. This is our first year in Class B and Burke is probably one of the best teams we will play this year.”
